If evertherewasan under rated car, it's the Citroen C5.
To many people, Citroen is excellent at turning out mid market hatchbacks and small sports cars, but few it seems believe it can produce execu tive models. Quite why that should be
is a mystery. Maybe it’s a per ceived lack of quality? Maybe the styling leaves a little to be desired? Maybeit’ssimplerac- ism that French engineers are inferior to German engineers? But the fact is the C5, Citro-
en’s classy take on the saloon market, deserves much more recognition than it gets. It is a well-designed motor

with fantastic engines and even better suspension set ups that put even the best ex ecutive expressesin the shade. OK, Citroen have some
work to do in the satisfaction stakes. The JD Power custom-
• er satisfaction survey placed three Citroen models in the bottom ten in 2014 and none in the top ten. We will have to wait for the
2015 survey to see i f Citroen has improved its standing, but my take on the C5 is good. It feels solid, well put to
gether and stylish and it’s a car which looks the part against rivals such as Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia. It costs from £21,670 on
the road but the version test ed here is the well-equipped C5 Exclusive Techno'model at £27,180 which, as you might expect, is lavishly equipped. The Techno pack adds
alloy wheels, parking sensors and a very good satellite nav igation system. The Tourer
.version also has a reversing camera. As well as the satellite navi
gation system there is a Con- nectingBox-jacksocket,USB port and Bluetooth - aspartof the new Techno pack option. That adds to devices such as air conditioning and cli
mate control to give you a pret ty well-equipped motor. ArecentfaceliftgavetheCs
a cleaner, more polished style and is designed to boost sales still further.
It’s on the open road,
though, where the C5 really shines. It has a fantastic ride and handling set up which is great on broken surfaces and superb on motorways.
The cabin feels like a pre
mium space. The huge central feature on the steering wheel got in the way of things a little but the switchgear is simple and stylish.
The boot, too, is good - it’s
deepandwideandeasytoload and with a capacity 439 litres. If that’s not enough, try the
C5 Tourer. It looksjust as good and it’s boot is 1,462 litres.
