A teenager who killed a mo­ torcyclist while at the wheel of a JCB has been warned he faces custody. Harry Shaw (19) admitted causing the death of father- of-two Craig Foster (42) by careless driving on Black- . burn Road, Simonstone, on March 23rd, last year, when he appeared at Burnley Crown Court. Mr Foster, from Accrington, died at the scene after his Ka­ wasaki ZX6R collided with the digger at about 4-3opm.


He had been riding to Clay- ton-le-Moors from Padiham. Well- known in the area, Mr Foster ran a motor busi­ ness in Hapton and former­ ly worked on his father’s butchers stall in Accrington. Shaw, from Blackburn Road, Simonstone, had originally been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The defendant, who willbe sentenced on July 31st, was bailed and given an interim driving ban by Judge Bever- leyLunt.


Barrow fire death inquest ‘Guiding Idol’ Ailyn recognised as inspirational role model


Girlguiding volunteer Ailyn Garley, leader of Grindleton Brownies, received an unforgettable surprise when a group of girls and young women recognised her volunteer efforts. Ailyn has been namedoneof83 “Guiding Idols” in Girlguid­ ing North West England - a new campaign led fay the region­ al charity to recognise its volunteers for their efforts. Girlguiding North West England members were asked to nominate a “Guiding Idol” - a volunteer that they felt was an inspirationalrolemodel. Following the nominations, a youth panel of girls and young women, aged seven to 14, were tasked with the difficult challenge of selecting nominees from each of the charity’s 17 guiding counties. The youth panel announced that they had selected 83 vol­ unteers from across the region and that each “Guiding Idol”


would be invited to attend a special celebration afternoon at Girlguiding North West England’s region headquarters. The event included thought-provoking activities, a candy floss machine for the “Guiding Idols” and an afternoon tea with a twist. Amid the celebrations, Ailyn received a Region Thanks badge from the Region Chief Commissioner, Julie Bell, and hadyet another surprise when a plaque was unveiled in the Region Headquarters’ garden. This was a memorable tribute that named all 83 “Guiding Idols” for their achievement. Ailyn told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times: “I’m feeling very honoured and surprised to have been nominated and I’ve had a lovely day celebrating with all the other Guiding Idols.”


An inquest into the death of an elderly Barrow woman who died after getting trapped in a house fire issettobeheld. Mrs Nellie Shaw (86) was killed when a ferocious fire tore through her detached house in Whalley Road, at 5-20 am on March 3rd. Her husband, Philip, managed to escape the blaze, but was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. The inquest will . be held on July 27th at Ribble Valley Borough Council.


Fire crews rescue trapped teen from car


A teenager was cut from a car by fire crews after a two car collisionneartotheA59 Whalley roundabout last Tuesday evening. Crews bat­ tled to free the 13-year-old trapped in the back seat. He was taken to Royal Black­ burn Hospital with suspect­ ed back and neckinjuries.


£12k cannabis haul at Clitheroe home


Clitheroe man James Mc- kenzie (27), of Beech Close, appeared before Blackburn magistrates after cannabis with a value of £12,000 was found at his home. He was sent to Preston Crown Court charged with producing8g6 grams of cannabis. He will appear on August 3rd.
