Visitors to the picturesque Forest of Bowland are being invited to submit smartphone and tablet photographs for the chance of winning prizes.
The “Rate My View” applica tion is an initiative from the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and invites visitors to “Capture it - Rate it - Upload it - Share it” and share what they feel about the landscape. The app, which is free, and
available on both Apple and Android platforms, automat ically uploads pictures taken on smartphones or tablets to the Rate my View website. It uses GPS technology to
pinpoint the user’s location and make sure they are in or near the AONB area, even de tecting the direction the per son is facing. Hetty Byrne, Sustainable
Tourism Officer for Forest of Bowland AONB, said: “The Rate my Viewapp is incredibly simple. “Users take their photo,
rate their view by giving it be tween 0 and 5 stars and sub mit up to three words or short phrases that sum up their view. “We’re hoping that over
time it will enable us to build up a picture of how the AONB is perceived.” The app has been devel
oped by the South Devon AONB in partnership with Plymouth University and is al ready being successfully used in South Devon AONB. It can be downloaded from
www.ratemyview.co.uk and anyone who uploads an image can be automatically entered into a prize draw Alternative Adventure
(
www.altadv.c6.uk) a Bowland Experience business member that runs outdoor pursuit ac tivities for a range of groups, is donating a first prize ofa GPS training course for one per son, and runner-up prizes of a Spray way Santiago jacket and Berghaus activity jacket. The prizes will be drawn on October30th.
VALLEY COMMUNITY
Free barbecue hailed a resounding success
More than 1,500 people from as far away as Bacup and Raw- tenstallattended the Love Clit- heroe barbecue. For three hours the queue
ofpeoplewereentertainedby a magician as they waited pa tiently for their free burger. A football cage, gladiator
apparatus, bouncy castle and a gyroscope proved popu lar with the energetic, while craft making and face paint ing were'on offer for the more creative. Every 20 minutes children
and adults took part in stage games and folk also received prayer for healing and words of encouragement and hope from the Healing Rooms and Stardream Teams. The event was staged by the churches in Clitheroe.
The Rev. Mark Pickett, rec
tor of St James’ in Clitheroe, said: “This has been a fantas tic event put on by volunteers from across the churches in
the town for the whole town. In serving our town in this way, for free, we are in some way modelling the love that God has for each of us.”

Textile experts examine the Low Moor banner
Low Moor Club recently hosted a visit from the sen- iortextileconservatorVivian Lochhead and her assistant conservator Jenny Bowersby from Manchester People’s History Museum to analyse the condition of a historic banner, dated 1925 and signed
byE.Bolton. The banner proudly
presents the “ANCIENT OR- DEROF BACON EATERS”, de picting a scene with a farmer and a local, conversing out side a cottage with two fine pigs in the foreground. When Low Moor Mill was served by workers from the
village who lived in cottag es and back-to-back houses close to the mill, many mill workers reared pigs in their backyards and gardens. Con sequently the people from Low Moor became known as “Bacon Eaters”. This tradition has been
kept alive by the public ap pearances of Percy, the Low Moor pig, who resides in Low Moor Club. Percy has repre sented the Bacon Eaters at torchlight processions dat ing back to 1911. Although Percy is in remarkably good shape, considering his age, LowMoorbannerisinneedof
careful treatment to conserve the oil painting and the linen canvas on which is is painted. The textile conservators
were fascinated by the unu sual banner and are hopeful thatfundingcanberealisedin order for them to help to pre serve this valuable and unique banner. If anybody has any photosorinformationregard- ing the artist
E.Bolton, or the banner, Low Moor Commit tee would welcome any addi tional information that may be forthcoming. Call chairman Mick Rich
ardson on 01200426672 with any details.
