control isn’t so masterful - in short it’s more fun to drive fast than around town, where progress isn’t so smooth. Inside, the GT is smart and
well finished, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces and some GT and RenaultSport logos scattered around to remind you of its pedigree. Main dials deserve praise
©
for their clear layout and the key 30 and 7omph markings are easily spotted, unlike with some rivals. Sports seats are up to Renault’s usual high standards, with bags of sup port and comfort, though rake adjustment is awkward. But some of the sheen is tak-

by Alan Candy Motoring writer
Things are hotting up for one of Renault's most elegant design pennings, the Megane.
The charming m id -s ize familycar gains a touch of
' RenaultSport pixie dust with the racy GT 220, which comes in hatch, coupe or estate guise. The GT 220 isn’t quite the
full blown 275hp Renault- Sport burner but is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo petrol en gine - the 220 figure refers to the horsepower it spits out,
with 25ilb/ft of torque from aslowas2,40orpm. Some critics have labelled
it as a ‘warm hatch’ but this damns it with faint praise. In truth, the GT zips from rest to 62mph in a pretty quick 7.6 sec onds, with a top speed of more than twice the legal limit. And the RenaultSport con
nection isn’t just confined to the engine and some sporty logos sprinkled around the car inside and out. New damp ers based on those from the full-on RenaultSport are now included, steeringhas been re tuned for improved responses and it also gets enlarged brake
discs and an upgraded brake pump.
There’s also plenty of tech
to help the Megane safely on its way when pushing it hard, in the form of ASR anti-skid regulation that keeps the car pointingstraightandULC(un- dersteer logic control) to stop the front wheels from pushing out wide. Standard gear also in cludes climate and cruise
control, auto lights and wip ers, LED running lights, sat nav, Bluetooth, USB input, a reversing camera and uprat ed sound system. Wading into battle with the
likes of Kia’s cee’d GT and Sko- da’s Octavia vRS, the Megane GT more than holds its own in terms of driving satisfac tion. Putting the car through its paces, it’s soon clear that performance is as dynamic
as expected. Let the car loose on an open road or pilot it through some country lanes and there’s plenty of involve ment in the action for driv er, with sharp steering, safe, secure, flat cornering and a general feeling of all round competence. The GT version isn’t such
a happy bunny around town, where the ultra-heavy clutch can get tiresome and fine
. toleft-handdrive,notablywith the handbrake, angled towards the passenger over the other side of the console, and the starter button, a stretch away over on the passenger side. Un like most Renaults, the ride is relentlessly rock hard, but that’sthepricepaidforthecar’s sporting nature. All the information you
could ever need is there and controlled by a small com mand button centre console; discovering what you want in a hurry is another matter, though. A hot little number from
Renault that gets the blood tingling.

Peugeot107ismost reliable student car
The most reliable ‘student. cars’ have been revealed by a warranty company, and the winner isn’t the car you’d expect. As university students
head back to their busy lives, working, sleeping, drinking or whatever it is they’re up to, Warranty Di rect has revealed that the most reliable car they could pick is a Peugeot 107. The firm calculates a Re
liability Index Score (RIS), basedonfrequencyofprob- lems and average costs to fix them. A lower score repre sents a better combination of these factors. The 2005-2014 Peugeot
107 came top out of the list of small cars that students
efficient in the world. It’s also the first car factory with its own indoor test track. The 750-metre track consists of
400m of asphalt and 6,000 dots simulating bumps in the road. The long test track puts Model S through its final
paces to ensure Tesla’s high standards in quality are main- tainedanddelivered with each vehicle.
•are most likely to buy, with a RIS of just four. The pre: tournament favourite was nudged into second, with the 2008-2015 Honda Jazz scoring five. A close third was the
2002-2010 Nissan Micra with a RIS of six. Then came the Peugeot 1007 on eight,
the old Mazda 2 with 10 and the previous generation Fiat Panda with 12. The 107 and its sister
car, the Citroen Cl, placed highly after recording not a single engine failure in any of the cars covered by War ranty Direct. David Gerrans, manag
ing director at Warranty Di rect said: “As students from across the UK prepare to take the next step in their education and new-found independence, choosing a reliable car to head to uni-
. versity with will no doubt remove someofthe worry. “Selecting the right car
will ensure undergraduates arrive at their new universi ty digs without a hitch - ora hole in their bank account.”
