East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the region’s best performers when it comes to retaining student nurses after their graduation. Over the last three years, 89% of the 238 student nurses have continued working with the Trust once their education is fin ished. This is abig improvement on 2011 when the trustonly retained46 of the 69 studentsthatstartedthecourse. . Linda Whitfield, head of workforce educa tion at the Trust, said: “The importance of recruiting and then retaining younger
nurses cannotjje stressed enough. “The country’s health and social care
workforce has a high proportion of older
employees, in particular one in three NHS community nurses who are aged 50 or . older. For this reason, retaining nine out
of 10 student nurses ensures our future workforce has the right numbers, skills and values to meet society's needs now, and
