It’s been a long time coming, butAudihavereallyputthe

bootinto their rivals with the latest A3.

The compact exec favourite, usually only available in 3-dr hatch or 5-dr Sportback form, has finally been reinvented as a stylish Saloon - and it makes you wonder what they were waiting for.

. Thenewtraditional,three- boxbootedversionhasanaw- ■ fill lot going for it. Not least the

new elegant shape, which will make its big brother A4 look anxiously over its shoulder.

But don’t saloons have less W E D D tN G B y p o s t

space in than hatchbacks? In this case, no. The Saloon is

based on the longer wheelbase of the five-door A3 Sportback but is 150mm longer overall,

11mm wider and 9mm lower. • Audi have also neatly side stepped the problem of ver satility. Although the rear

apertureobviouslycan’tmatch that of thehatch, rear seats fold downquicklyinonemovement to create a two-tier luggage floor right through from front to back that is very useful. OK, so the rear legroom

doesn’t match that of the A4, but there’s still more room in the back than a Mercedes CLA. Asyou might expect, there’s

very little difference as to how the Saloon drives compared' with its hatchback siblings. I have been at the wheel

of the i38bhp 1.4 TFSI pet rol model, which is the entry

' point to the A3 Saloon range, but there is ne ver a feeling that this is a base-spec model. In fact, the feisty 1.4-litre engine caught me out. There

was I idly thinking this was a 2.0-litre when I suddenly re- memberedthis was.a much smaller engine lurking under that rather beautiful rounded bonnet. Very deceptive. - , :'- \ Andithasafewtricksupits-

nered about town, the Saloon whips up a storm around the

lanes, whereits handy size and precise handling make it a joy

to steer through the tightest of' bends.

Ride quality is also excel

lent, so this small Saloon re ally does have a premier feel. AswithallAudis,theA3Sa- •
