. ravens, the rare sighting of a corncrake, the white-tailed bearded seals along the coast and the Highland cattle with their enormous horns free to wander everywhere.'' The Sharps’ films of
Egypt showed the great tem ples of Edfu and Abu Simbel, the colourful markets, the obviouspovertyofpresent-
. day inhabitants and, finally ,the Great Pyramids at Giza: and the Sphinx.
.
• Ashortfilm “Neighbours from Hell” portrayed the ag
gressive habits of wild wood peckers. Next came Peru and the textiles in vibrant colours
made from the fleeces of al-; pacas and llamas. The women spun the
thread arid the men did the knitting.Overthemountains - hovered condors, while col- ourful markets used the railway tracks - between timetabled tra in s - to sell
. their wares offoods and tex tiles.
The Sharps found it dif
ficult to acclimatise to the ’ high‘altitudes, especially at the world heritage site of MachuPichu. Last of all, “80 degrees
North” featured a trip by boat to Spitzbergen, now named Svalbard, to look out for po- lar bears. ■ Humpbacked and beluga
whales were spotted, along with a crowd of walruses and the. rare sight o f an Arcticfox':. ■ The Naturalists’ next
meeting is at the St Mary’s Centre, in Church Street, today (Thursday) at 7-30 pm when Stephen Halliwell will talk about St Kilda in a talk entitled “The Lonely Isle.”
