Commissioner sets out new victims’ strategy
Or are you descended from the hundreds of lineages from all over the world that are found in the DNA of the British? All of us on these islands are immigrants, descendants
.both of pioneers who repopulated the North after the end of the last ice age and also much more recent
arrivals. BritainsDNA can answer an age-old question - it can tell you where you come from.
Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner has described how he wants to put victims and witnesses “at the heart” of services in the county- and ensure their needs are being met by the services on offer. Clive Grunshaw has pub

lished a new victims’ strategy, which outlines his propos als to transform the services available in the county when he takes on responsibility for commissioning them from next year. And the Commission
er said this responsibility presents an “exciting oppor tunity” to ensure Lancashire offers the best possible care and support for victims and witnesses. Mr Grunshaw said: “The
key thing for me is that vic tims’ services in Lancashire have victims’ needs at the heart of them. “I want victims to feel in
volved in the criminal justice process, to be kept up-to-date ■ on their case, and to be treated with dignity at all stages of the process. “Their needs have to be
recognised so they can be effectively supported what

ever happens. It is vitally im portant to me we have services in Lancashire that are able to do that. “I have put a lot ofwork in
to developing a strategy which outlines exactly what I want the services I commission to achieve, and have consult ed with victims and existing providers to identify what the best services should look like. “Now, in Lancashire; we
have a unique opportunity to ensure we are providing those services to our residents.” The strategy sets out the
Commissioner’s 10 aims and objectives for commissioning victims’ services, which have been influenced by the con sultations which have taken place,incIudingJanuary’svic- tims’ and witnesses’ consulta tion event.
The overarching aim of the
strategy is to ensure the sup port is put in place to prevent people becoming repeat vic
tims, protect victims from further harm and help them to better cope and recove.r following a crime. And it will ensure services
are not commissioned in iso lation, but that organisations
work together to ensure con
sistent delivery of support for victims county wide. TheCommissioneradded:
“I am a firm
believer.in part nership work, and I believe I am in a unique position to bring organisations from
across Lancashire together to ensure our residents receive the best possible services. “Now, work will begin to
ensure we commission serv ices that will achieve what I - and victims in Lancashire -w an t and need them to. I am very confident the level of work which has been put into developing this strategy, and my ongoing commitment to delivering effective services, will ensure that happens.” The Commissioner will be
responsible for commission ing victims’ services from April, 2015, although some services, such as those to sup port the families of homicide victims, will remain nationally funded. The full victims’ strategy
