Author and ex-detective’s tales of murderous people

Author Paul Heslop gave a talk on the subject of “murder ous people” to members of Clitheroe and District Probus

Club. A police detective in vari

ous Forces for 30 years, he spoke about the infamous Mary Ann Cotton from the 19th century who poisoned at least 21 persons, including most of her children, chiefly for the insurance payout . Mr Heslop also spoke about Ruth Ellis, who was abused as-

a child and later as an adult by all her lovers. She shot her then lover,

David Blakely, as he left a pub lic house. Blakely came from a

wealthy family, but again his father regularly assaulted him and Blakely in time assaulted

Ellis. The judge ruled that the murder was premeditated and

that there were no mitigating circumstances (the law would view this differently today). The public did not like the

outcome. A Mrs Van derElst

triedtoraisepublicsupportto stop the hanging, but it went ahead.

The next meeting will be

held tomorrow (Friday), at 10-45 am in the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe, when Mr Peter Cunliffe will talk on the title “Bomber Command”.

' Clitheroe U3A - University of the Third Age - held its latest monthly meeting with a near full house present in St Mary’s Hall. The speaker was Mr John

Ellwood, from Fleetwood, who has been fascinated by rail ways since boyhood. His presentation was a de

light, and with his knowledge and enthusiasm members learned much about the im pact railways have had upon

our art, culture and leisure; how they had influenced the workofartistsfromTurnerto Norman Wilkinson; and pro vided access to and developed both employment and holiday activities as promoted by won derful posters, poems and, of course, films. John was thanked for a

much enjoyable “brief en counter”. Group chair Mrs Ann Kay provided much information

about many the U3A group’s activities, regarding which de tails and contacts are available at Clitheroe and other librar ies in the area. The next open month

ly meeting is at 2-3opm on Tuesday, August 12th, at the same venue when the speak er will be Ian Barclay, making a return visit to e inform with his knowledge and enthusi asm for art deco. Inquiries to u3asites.0rg.uk/clitheroe
