The Nissan with the original X factor is now into its third generation, competing in one of the hottestsections of the market. I attended the launch of the


- original X-Trail back in 2001 for what was then a boxy,

■ ■ •squared toughie and one of Nissan’s first crossover SUVs. It was immediately likeable, practical and has remained a firm. Nissan favourite, even though newcomer stablemates Juke and Qashqai have stolen all the glory and dominated the class.


Inevitably, the new X-Trail

The Blue Oval car maker Ford has updated its popu­ lar Kuga sports utility vehi­ cle with improved engines and more in-car technol­ ogy. • Under the bonnet the


flagship Kuga diesel mod­ el receives a horsepower boost, with the 2.0-litre motor’s output now 180 horsepower -17 more than before. It’s also cleaner, with the 2.0-litre diesel family now producing less CO2. It’s the same story on


the petrol front, with Ford swapping the Ruga’s 1.6-li­ tre EcoBoost engine for a 1.5-litre unit and reducing CO2 emissions to i43g/km fromi54g/km. Alongside the engine upgrades, Ford has im­
