A village stalwart known forher zest forlife, beaming smile and kind spirit has died afterashortbattlewith acute myeloid leukaemia.
Val Boothman (59), of Queens way, Waddington, died sudden ly but peacefully in Blackpool Victoria Hospital where she had been receiving treatment for her condition. Born at Ribbleton, Preston,
Val had moved to Waddington with her husband, David, in
1976. She quickly settled into
village life and was the driv ing force behind many events that brought the community together, starting with her organisation of the street par ty to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. She went on to organ
ise many village sports days and discos, and also be came the first lady scorer for the village cricket team (a job that also came with the re sponsibility of making tea for the players). Val, along with David plus

Disputed footpath to reopen soon as order becomes law
The Secretary o f State has confirmed an order that will ensure the re-opening of a public right of way in Whal ley which has been the sub-
jectofalengthylegalprocess. The footpath, from Mit-
ton Road to Clitheroe Road at the Eagle at Barrow, known as Whalley N0.5, was blocked near Clitheroe Road in 2008. The Clitheroe group of
the Ramblers sought a foot path order to define the route of the path, and to

confirm it as a right-of-way. At a public inquiry a year
ago, an inspector decided in favour of the order. After a period of time required to al low for objections, the order has now become law. Lancashire County Coun
cil officers have put notices on the path confirming this, with a map of the route. There is also a map and details of the route and the order on the parish council noticeboard in the centre of Whalley.
As yet, various obstruc
tions to the route mean the path is not usable, but the process of ensuring these are cleared should begin short ly. Being able to use this path again after a gap of six years will be warmly welcomed by Clitheroe Ramblers and many local WhaUey residents More information about

heroe Royal Grammar School third out of 10 in the list ofar- ea premiums, says that homes close to the top rated schools are more expensive than other similar properties in the same county, with prices of houses near to CRGS being 62% high
er - an equivalent of £85,867 above other homes in the area.
Researchers looked at the
top 30 secondary state schools in England as well as the top 10 performing secondary state schools in each region. Near ly all the top 30 state schools have selective entry require ments. Marc Page, mortgages di
rector at Lloyds Bank said: “Although property values can be significantly lower in neighbouring areas, parents don’t appear to be put off from paying a premium to ensure their child has the best possi- blechancetoattend their cho
