says Valley MP

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has spoken out over the defectionofMPDouglas Car- swell from the Conservative Party to the UK Independ ence Party. Announcing his deci sion to quit the Tories and

join UKIP, Mr Carswell said it was his intention to simul taneously resign his seat in Parliament and stand in the subsequent by-election in Clapton as the UKIP candi date. Speaking from Westmin

ster shortly after the an nouncement Conservative Mr Evans said: “I count Doug las as a friend and I share many of the sentiments he raised in his speech. “However, causing an

unnecessary by-election will not deliver on his wish es, particularly on giving the British people the ref erendum on our continued membership of the Europe an Union, which we desper ately need. “The only way for this to

happen is to elect.a Conserv ative government in the 2015

Ribble ValleyMPNigelEvans

General Election, as every vote for UKIP helps the La bour Party and Ed Miliband get into Downing Street, and they will not give us our ref erendum. “I am also firmly of the

beliefthatreal reform in our relationship with the EU is possible and that it is neces sary to undertake this and give the British people a real choice in the referendum, rather than offer an exit or the status quo.”

by Al a n Candy Motoring Writer

We’ve all heard ofthe Nissan Juke. But how about NISMO?

This is where Juke gets inter esting. NISMO is Nissan’s per formance brand and the Juke is the first road car in Europe to wear its badge. Tve met it, driven it and I’m

impressed. Mightily. I haven’t had so much fun in a car since thelast GTI. Comparisons are difficult, because the VW Golf is a hatch and Juke is a cross over but you get my point. Once wordgets round, NISMO could soon stake its own claim to fame. Juke is already famous for

its Marmitelooks-you either love it or hate it. One of my friends says it’s the ugliest car he’s ever seen. I’m in the other Marmite camp. I believe Juke is a startlingly brilliant piece of timeless automotive art. NISMO takes Juke a huge

step forwards in terms of design, performance and handling.

The i.6 DiG-T version I

drove in Storm White (yes, white is still the ‘in’ colour) boasted the familiar high rid ing stance and bulbous wings. But NISMO adds red outside mirror caps with in-built in dicator strips, smart grey side sills with a red stripe and a chunky rear roof spoiler, plus fabulous 18-inch alloys. Inside, NISMO is equally

smartly dressed. Let’s start with the three-spoke sports steering wheel, which fea tures a unique soft suede sec- tionwherethehandsrestand a red strip that indicates the top centre. There’s a black and grey colourschemethat works

' effectively and red piping de tail on gearbox surround, wheel and seats, plus a gen erous helping of‘piano black’ gloss surfacing. . All switchgear is located on

the centre stack and is logical ly arranged; the driver has a choice of Normal, Sport and Eco drive modes; the tuner is simple to operate and the touchscreen sat-nav can mi raculously be understood and set in seconds. There’s even a

retro CD slot, although Juke boasts hands-free phone, col our reversing camera, USB port, AUXsocketforMP3 play ers and Nissan Connect with six speakers. But all this would count for little is the NISMO didn’t

excite the senses on the move. This it does in some style. The smooth l. 6-litre 20ohp unit is a potent reminder of

just how good a tuned petrol engine can be, putting diesel back in the dark ages. It’s everything you hope it

might be - zesty, with a lusty pull right through the range and dynamic response when you put your foot down - the NISMO can smack past the 62mph mark in a very quick 7.8 seconds. Juke’s major trump card

NISSANJUKENISMO - ’ PRICE: £20,395 (Juke prices start'

is the superb high driving position and the mystery is , how Nissan have managed to make such a tall-riding car * perform so well. Being able to see the bonnet and bulging headlamps allows the driver to ‘point and shoot’ the car with pinpoint accuracy and the NISMO has no qualms about ^ attacking bends with barely any lean and great adhesion. Aslicksix-speedmanualgear- box adds to the driving fun. The boot is disproportion

ately small, yet with the back € seats down, a decent amount of space is achieved. A minor grumble in the great scheme of things with this great (yes, GREAT)car.

Fancy somewhere a bit unusual this winter?Think Madeira. It's a top cruise destination, it's got exotic flora and fauna, mountains, forest, great food and nightlife too, but none ofthe party crowds. Plus it's got year-round Goldilocks weather, not too hot and not too cold, but just right!
