A soft-top that s a rational choice

-<,r^'p. That’s right, the glam orous, glitzy Cascadafrom Vauxhall might look likea po seur’s dream, but it’s actually quite a rational choice.
Hardto believe when thepow- ered roof folds effortlessly in to the boot, leaving you with
$ a rather handsome open-top per.
But while a similar-sized
Audi As would set you back at least £32,000, the Cascada can
^K’:eyoursforjustover£24,ooo. • It means you get a proper
full-sized four-seater convert ible for the price of a much smaller model like Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf or Volkswa gen Eos.
But to be honest the Cas
cada doesn’t feel like a cut- price model. It has all the qualityyou would expectfrom an Audi. In fact, Cascada illus trates the great strides made by Vauxhall in recent years. Insignia started it but re
cent models such as Adam, Mokka and even the unusu al Ampera have shown that Vauxhall can straddle be tween being a popular brand and a premium one. Cascada is quite a car. It
is Vauxhall’s first own-built proper full-sized convertible since the 1930s and at first glance it looks like it might be a Lexus, say, or an Infiniti. It’s a big car, longer than an
Audi A5 convertible, and with a fantastic set of engines. This one is a 1.6 litre 20ops model which is capable of i46mph and 0 to 6omph in 8.5 sec
onds. It’s quick and smooth but there are cheaper and more frugal versions. It’s also a pretty versatile
car with plenty of cabin space and a boot which spans 280 li tres to 380, depending wheth er the roof is up or down. Vauxhall have gone for a
soft roof rather than a fold ing metal roof. Metal ones are good, but heavy and bulky. The fabric roof here looks good and mean that the car is nimble. It looks good with the roof up or down. The roof is a multi-layered affair which folds down in 17 seconds. It is guaranteed to draw a crowd, even if you don’t want it to. The hood can even be low
ered or raised on the move at speeds ofup to3omph. I must say the cabin can be
a litfle dark and vision out the back is limited which means
the parking sensors are very welcome. The all-new 1.6 litre unit
heads the engine line up but there are also 2.0 litre biturbo, 1.4 litre petrol and 2.0 litre tur bodiesels available. While the Cascada shares
its size with some full-sized convertibles, Vauxhall is po sitioning it in the C-sector (think Golf, Astra and Focus) due to its competitive pricing. The C-segment accounts for one per cent of the total UK car market or around 21,000 cars a year and Vauxhall ex pects the Cascada to make up ten per cent of this segment’s volume each year. Inside, the Cascada is a
classy car. It combines the well-equipped functionality of an Insignia’s interior with handcrafted modules not found in any other Vauxhall. It is also a highly equipped
car. As well as all the usual features such as powered windows and mirrors, alloy wheels, climate control and cruise control, it also comes with stability control, lane de parture signals, heated steer ing wheel and blind spot alert. It has a push-button hand
brake rather than a tradition al lever, which may put some people off, but it does have hill-start assist to prevent the car rolling back on a hill. Advanced premium op
tions never seen before on a Vauxhall include an electric seat belt presenter, previous ly only available on premium models such as the Mercedes E-class and the Audi A5 Cabri olet. This option, gives more comfortable seatbelt reach and ensures the use of seat- belt. Another Vauxhall first is
heat reflective leather seats. The Bayer Cool Leather Sys tem reduces the temperature up to 20-30 degrees and are ef fective when not in direct sun light meaning lower residual heat levels and the warming process takes longer. This fea ture is standard with all leath er seats.
