‘^The worst 24 hours of my life’: MP talks candidly of his arrest

BY J ulie Magee : -- email:julie,magee@jpress.co-uk - ■ ■ Twitter:@clithadvertiser'. ■'

>

One of the worst periods of his life was how Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans described the events that have unfolded this Bank Holiday weekend.

During an exclusive interview with Clitheroe Advertiser and Times reporter Julie Magee on Bank Holiday Monday, a vis ibly emotional Mr Evans told howthesupporthewasreceiv- ing from the local community and wider public in general

was helping him a “tremendous amount”. Since it became public that

Mr Evans had been arrested on Saturday on allegations of rape and sexual assault, local con stituents, friends and neigh bours have rallied around with many stopping him in the small Ribble Valley village of Pendle ton to hand him messages o f support. :: Atteraptingtocarryonwith

everyday life as much as possi ble, MrEvanspurposefully vis ited his local for Sunday lunch and on Bank Holiday Monday sat outside in the sun enjoying lunch with friends. During this lunch, Mr

Evans was approached by sev eral members of the public who simply wanted to,shake his hand, wish him well or hand him a card of support.

One of the cards handed to

. the 55-year-old MP read: “Just a note to say we are thinking of you and anything we can do to support you, just aski We know you will stay strong.” . “It’s been a superb reac

tion,” said the clearly emotion al MP, “People who know me and some that don’t know me have been putting their arms around me. “Yesterday (Saturday) was

the worst 24 hours of my life, today (Monday) is the worst 48 hours of my life.” '

But he added: “The sup-

' port I’ve had on Facebook and in person through cards is re ally helping me a tremendous amount.” On Sunday Mr Evans post ed a message on his Facebook

page thanking members of the public for their support. More

' than 1,000 wrote messages of support on his Facebook page in thc24 hours after his arrest. , He wrote: “thanks for the amazing overwhelming sup-

. port at this difficult time....” ; After his arrest Mr Evans

stayedat the home of former Coronation Street actress Vicky Entwistle at Bolton-by- Bowland to avoid the media glare.

, The 44-year-old actress,

who played Janice Battersby in Coronation Street and is currently performing in Les Miserables in London, helped encourage the Ribble Valley MP to publicly acknowledge his ho mosexuality threeyears ago. Mr Evans was planning on

supporting his friend and fel low Conservative Coun. Kevin

Thousands of messages of support are sent to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Horkin who was due to be

.. made Mayor of Clitheroe dur- ingaceremonyon Tuesday. Mr Evans had been asked to make a speech during the ceremony, but told The Clitheroe Adver tiser he didn’t want the cere mony to be overshadowed by the weekend’s allegations. : In this week’s national

press, speculation has been rife about a mark on Mr Evan’s fore-

: head which was clearly visible when he appeared before cam- erason Sundaymorning when he gave his statement to mem bers of the press from outside his home in Pendleton. . Stretching from the top to

the bottom of his forehead, Mr Evans said the mark, which has been concealed by make-.up, was caused by treatment that he had undergone for a stress headache. “But that’s the least of my embarrassments,” Mr Evans said. When Mr Evans was asked

if he would make any changes to his lifestyle as a result of the

, allegations, he said: “Someone ■ said to me ‘you’ve got some tremendous friends Nigel, but maybe you need to change someohhem’.” . - Through the pages of The

. Clitheroe Advertiser, MrEvans also wanted to ask that friends and constituents did not text messages ofsupport to his mo bile phone which he said was still with police as part of the investigations.

. . . Totally denying the allega

tions, Mr Evans said he had no idea why the claims had been madebytwopeoplehehad “re garded as friends”. In a short statement that

he made outside his home in Pendleton on Sunday morn ing, he said: “Yesterday I was interviewed by the police con cerning two complaints - one of which dates back fouryears, made by two people who are well-known to each other, and whountilyesterdayiregarded as friends. “The complaints are com

pletely false and I cannot un derstand why they have been made, especially as I have con tinued to socialise with one as recently as last week. “lappreciatethewaythepo-

lice have handled this in such a sensitive manner.' “And I would like to thank

my colleagues, friends and members of the public who have expressed their support, andlike me, a sense ofincredu-

lity at these events. Thank you very much.” A spokesman for Lanca

shire Constabulary said: “We take all allegations of a sexual nature extremelyseriouslyand understand how difficult it can be for victims to have the confi dence to come forward.
