Martin has been called one of the greatest guitar play ers in the world, and his lat est project explores the roots of flamenco through Moor ish and Indian gypsy music, Sephardic song and his own flamenco style. . “Flamenco is like a potent
drug, when you’re really in volved with it,” said Martin. “ T h a t ’s i t , fo r l i f e . Even when you go to other places you carry it with you and you don’t feel right unless you have that music with you.
“It’s becoming universal, a
bitlikejazz.” As well as helping to spread •
flamenco around the world, Martin is also known for reaching back into the mu- : sic’spast.
- “I’m intensely in te r
ested in the history of f lam e n c o ,” he ad d ed . “Spain had 800 years with the Moors. Buildings like the Alhambra Palace in Grena da reflect that, the mixture of Andalusia and the Moors. “Architecture, music, many things. That fascinated me so 1 went to places like Tunisia and Cairo and looked into that mu sic quite closely.” Martin has drawn from
many influences, adding: “I’ve done compositions with Gordon Giltrap, Richard Thompson,-and the late Rory Gallagher, the great Irish rock guitarist. “Most of all, though, 1 find
it inspiring to write and play.”
. MartinwillplayTheGrand in the company of a four-piece ensemble, also re-visiting his classic album. Musical Al hambra, with flute, percus sion, clarinet and saxophone complementing his beautiful guitar playing. ,Headded:“Itisafascinat-
ingmix of artists, with Louai Alhenawi, a ney reed-flute player from Damascus, and guitarist Abdul Salam Kheir fromLebanon. “I played Clitheroe as a so
lo artist previously, but I was very keen to come back be cause 1 really liked the feel of thetheatre. “1 doenjoyplayingthatpart
of the country because the au diences are very kind.” . Juan Martin’s Musica Al
hambra performs this Satur day, May 11th, at 8 pm (doors 7-15 pm, £16.50 advance tick et). .
