Hiniyliavel gotnoplniiis? - r The spring frosts can cause real daiTiage in the garden, particularly with fruiting trees, as the emerging flowers ' get frosted off before they have chance to get pollinated, therefore, causing -' a lack of fruit in the summer. It does not only damage flowering plants, but also plants coming into leaf the foliage can be burnt. Even plants like Japanese maples were killed this year as the frost' burnt them when they had just come • into leaf!

j ' ; - ■ ■

Why does iny lawn look yellow? Even though rain is essential for a healthy garden, there can be too much of a goc^ thingl Crass needs nitrogen to become dark green and all the rain : - washes this through the soil before the roots can absorb it, it's good to feed grass to help it green up in the summer

and you can also give a specialist feed • for the autumn high in potash. But the colour is purely down to the excessive amount of rain.

i li

Sbould I feed my banging. baskets? Again with the rain this year washing ' the fertilizer through its a good rime - ' to feed, use tomato feed and next year to help get great results incorporate a slow release fertilizer into the compost and also a water retaining gel to help ■ in dry spells. These will both give the plants all they need to look great

WITH gardening being seen as the thing to do, the flower shows are back on top!

If you've never been to a flower show before, then you have not

j’ust missed out on a great day out, but also the chance to see some of the country's finest nurseries with their array of plants all in one- place. In the north we have the Harrogate Spring and Autumn flower shows, the prestigious RHS Tatton Park flower show in July and Southport flower show in August, all being at different times of year you get to see a range of plants in their full glory, from starting and finishing off the season at the two Harrogate flower shows, to

seeing all the colourful summer perennials at Southport and Tatton park. Since last writing we have just come back from Southport Flowef

Show where we were awarded a large Gold medal for our display of hardy summer perennials in the grand floral marquee, and were also awarded the trophy for best exhibit of hardy plants In show. T

1 r Force narcissi! Available to buy now, you

can pot these up and grow them inside to be in with a chance for having them in flower by Christmas! November is the normal time to plant them for Spring flowers.

2 -Prune raspberiies , Now is the time to pmne

.the old fruited stems of raspberries down to ground level, this helps the plant put .

more energy into producing stronger canes for next year.

S-Take cuttini^ of tender perennials Penstemmons and Salvias

are too tender in our wet northern climate, so take cuttings off established

i i The competition at these shows is very tough, and the challenge is

getting all the plants to flower at the right time, this year especially has been a challenge with the cool conditions, lack of sunshine and rain which damages the blooms as the plants come into flower. Now when visiting any flower show it's more than just flowers, you

will also find an array of stands offering other garden-related items, such as greenhouses, outdoor seating and anything else you could think of! One of the best in my opinion are the food tents as you get the chance to buy as well as sample an array of different foods. There is a ticket price involved, but when you weigh up the amount

you get to see all in one day in one place it works out good value for money. The next show is the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show on

September 14th to 1.6th, if you have a very-green autumn garden-;;, ■ it's a great chance to find something to brighten it up, and beings if . towards the end of the season you can find some great bargainsi ■

to do spotlight

plants now, keep them in a sheltered place over winter and then plant out in the spring.

4-Xrimboz hedges If you have a box hedge

give it a clip over now just after its new shoots have emerged to keep it in good shape and looking smart over the winter months. With 'Box Blight' you need to prune out any dead wood in the bush and feed with a high potash fertilizer.

8 - Prune and train Pyracantha

Now they have finished

growing you can lightly prune and train in long

shoots of lyracantha to tidy up the plant.
