CHELSEA CHOP - What does this do to my plants?

Certain plants like Border Phlox, Heleniums, Monardas and a few others can be half-chopped at

-this time of year. . Instead of growing to the

■ heavens in June, this removes the

•growth bud and tells the plant to grow lower down, helping give you a mo're compact plant and also gives more flower because ■ where you remove one stem you get two! ■.

WISTERIA PRUNING - How do I prune my Wisteria?

You prune once in early Spring

:. before the buds have opened and take back any long shoots to tidy

, the bush'in general. Then after flowering the plant:

-will put on a flush or growth, th^e shoots should be pruned approximately six buds from where.they start shooting and this will encourage side shooting

and reduce the leggy look of the plant. , .

. •

This method of pruning is called spur pruning because it helps encourage a framework of spurs amongst the plant.

NO PEAS - 1 had my peas in a shade tunnel last year and got no peas, why not?-

. Peas will grow and flower well inside a poly, or shade • tunnel,.however if the bumble bees cannot'get onto them to

. pollinate them, then they will not be able to produce the seeds which gives you the peas! So look at growing them outside,

. or when irifjower leave the doors open.

> Jobs to do...

1 - Weeding KEEP on top of weeding out those emerging surface growing weeds such as bittercress and meadow grass because if ieft they wii! seed around, and as they say one year's seeding, seven years weeding! -

2 -Trim Back Pulmonaria GIVING these a clip over after flowering will encourage lots of healthy new leaves and remove the old flower spikes. Give a

liquid feed high in nitrogen to help encourage fresh new foliage. •

3 - Prune Clematis Montana WHEN finished flowering you can scale back Clematis montana to where you see shoots to help shapen them, and keep an eye on long shoots, nip them out to encourage a more bushy plant

4 - Strawbeny Runners CLIP off strawberry runners to

help encourage the plant to put more energy into flower rather than growing to help give you plenty of fruits later on. Make sure to feed with potash to help encourage more fruits.

5 - Feed Containers ANY pots with shrubs or perennials in need to be fed with a pellet based fertilizer as the plants cannot find their own source of food so you need to be putting it there for therp!

GREAT for mass colour in spring and also ideal for tumbling over the edge of a wall, they come in a range of colours including white, pinks and reds. . ■, ■ Just to top it off the flowers are also

WITH Spring nearing an end and Summer just around the corner, now is the time to start looking at incorporating Summer colour into the garden. Gardens can look show stopping in the Spring

and sometimes very green in the Summer. This is down to plant choice generally being focussed on - what is in flower now, without sparing much of a thought for what is still to flower. Look at introducing some long lasting colour

by using perennials such as Polemoniums (Jacobs Ladder), proving easy to grow and they flower for what seems an eternity. In particular Polemonium "Bressingham Purple" stands out from the rest with its striking royal blue flowers held over rich plum purple foliage and unlike other varieties has an upright habit rather that sprawling. One of my true favourite plants for long lasting

Summer colour has to be the Achilleas (Yarrow). Having ferny like foliage with medium-sized spikes of pincushion-like flowers they last for up to eight weeks, through July and August and they come in an array of colours from Red to Yellow, and Pink to White they are what you call good value for money plants. Make sure to divide them eveiy couple of years to help encourage vigour but being totally, hardy they really are worth it.

Other great perennials for Summer colour include the Border Phlox, Monardas,-Crocosmias, Astilbes

' plus many more. ' But also when planting up spaces in the garden

spare a thought for a few plants that flower later on towards the end of summer,-giving you a balance of colour throughout the season.

At the nurseiy laft week we held our event on "Fantastic Foliage", which proved a great success,

. enlightening our keen gardeners into using foliage instead of flower and also how to get the best out of their existing garden plants, they went away

filled with inspiration and a list of jobs to do as long as their arms!
