TEN years after Wheatus stayed the charts with their catchy anthem "Teenage Dirtbag", the New York pop punksters are coming to Clitheroe, writes Tony Dewhurst. Their fieiy single might have been
a one hit wonder; but Wheatus' song sold millions of records worldwide and they top the bill for a night of power chord punk
mayhem at The Grand next Friday Oune 1st). The timing could not have
been bettered as the song has re-entered the charts a decade on, coinciding with the release of the' film American Pie: the Reunion. Wheatus frontman Brendan Brown said: "I was absolutely astonished
by the success of Teenage Dirtbag, and then the BBC phoned me the
other week and said it was the fourth highest selling rock song of the 21st centuiy and it was like, 'Wow... man'.
"We actually got to number
two in the UK charts — apparently something called Atpmic Kitten beat us to the top spot" A decade on, VVheatus are still
alive and well, and their music is enjoying a foot-stomping revival. They are also celebrating a dozen years on the road with a world tour
and a documentary film, shot in New York. So what keeps Wheatus going?
An exploration of all things Wheatus brings up countless
anecdotes, YouTube and music industry gossip. "I never wanted to take over the world or be a millionaire, so I'm
still doing what I want to do," said Brown. Wheatus play The Grand on
Friday June 1st (£12 advance ticket, Box Office: 01200 421599). Support comes from Cornmo and Math The Band.
