up and help us to a great victory.’’Clittieroe head into games against Edenfield away and Cherry Tree at home in a double header this weekend and the Clitheroe

in-1 lif By Andrew Frost 'i- !

CLITHEROE continued their recent good form in the Houldsworth Ribblesdale Cricket League, producing the result of the 'weekend by inflicting league leadeis Bar- noldswick’s first defeat of the season. A superb unbeaten knock

I r

of 94 fi'om . young batsman Josh McDowell helped steer the Chatbum Road side to a hard earned victory which sent a clear message to their rivals that they mean business this year. The margin of victory

couldn’t have been tighter as it was left to the home side to knock the remaining tuns off in the final over of the game to keep pace in the hunt for a top four finish and a Lancashire Cup berth.

CRICKET The visitors won the toss

and elected to bat making a strong start with opener Abdul Saddique reaching a half century while being ably sup ported by Liam Bedford (38) and Bamoldswick pro Imran Khalid(31).

• ' Despite the early runs

the leaders were never able to dominate the Clitheroe attack, continually being ham pered by the fall of key vnck- ets throughout their middle order. The tight bowling imit was

led by Thomas Lord (3-74) and Kashif Siddique (3-48) who were the men most responsible for restricting the visitors to just 175-7 from their allotted overs. . Clitheroe’s reply couldn’t

have got off to a worse start with their top three .batsman amassing a poultry two runs between them as the Barlick opening bowlers reduced the

: DIBB

home side to 4/3. However, the loss of wick

ets only meant an intro duction to the crease for McDowell who wasted no time in chasing down the 175 target. Supported by Peter Dibb (30) the pair looked to be cruising towards vic tory until a series of quick breakthroughs reduced Paul Gaskell’s side to their final wicket.

' Continued pressure from

the leaders and stubborn resistance, from number 11, Joshua Marquet, meant it all came down to the final over of the game. Up stepped star man McDowell to hit. the

winning runs with just three balls to spare and earn his a side a well , deserved fourth victory on the bounce and close the gap on the teams above them. After the game proud

Clitheroe captain Gaskell was quick to heap the praise on the middle order bats man, he said: “We’re all delisted for Josh. “The ability has always

been there for all to see but' unfortunately up until now he hasn’t been able to build upon his starts. “Luckily this time round

when we were struggling he has managed to step

s

. skipper .is confident the , ..team can - finish the season . strongly. . “Previously we have let

ourselves down at vital moments throughout' the season but we seemed to have stopped that now and we are confident of extend ing our good form. “Realistically

the

title is out of reach and Bamoldswick vdll probably win the league, but we want to continue this current form and finish as high as possible. “We’re only 11 points

behind second place so we are hopeful of catching them but we ■will see.” Chasers Read ■ took full advantage, though

, Bamoldswick still lead by 26 points with five games remaining. Read won in a canter at

Ribblesdale Wanderers after restricting the home side to 152-9. Joey Marshall (65 not out)

and Jordan • Clark (60 not out) made batting look easy as the visitors won by nine wickets. Callum Waddington top

scored with 64 for Baxenden as they batted first at Salesbury. And their total of 200-6 was 40 too many for the

home side despite Susantha'- Pradeep’s 77.

46 runs. The locds totalled 230-9,

as Richard Lamb top-scored with 77. In reply, Edenfield were

all out for 184, despite 60 from Paul Gallagher, as Simon Gorton took 5-38. • THE Clitheroe Cricket

League title race took another twist this week when the lead changed han^ with just 1 vveek remaining. Low Moor easily defeated

Chipping ‘A’ after bowl ing them out for 63 , Danny Turner retired with 30 in the victorious run chase. Last weeks

lead

ers Calderstones came a cropper against Sabden. Calderstones made 101 'for 8 off their 18 overs with Ibby Hussain making 30 retired. In reply

Sabden sneaked home in the last over 'with 3 wickets to spare. Dave Flounders held the innings together with 27. In the other game St James

beat Chipping Ramblers The league are on the

lookout for new teams for next summer , so if there are any teams who fancy entering or would like more information. please contact John Hargreaves on 07921 740255

CLITHEROE Rugby Club’s inaugural ‘Touch Rugby’ competition was hailed a mighty success by those who took part.

Blessed by decent weather with just

a shower at the tea time interval, it was a thrilling riot o f open rugby played in excellent sporting spirit.. Chef de mission Bob Wilkinson

organised a baffling league structure that only he could understand, but all the games got played on time anyway. This was followed by the top four

going into a play of f system. The play-offs and final were sched

uled for just after the tea interval. This led somewhat to a decline in

standards across the board, depending on how busy you had been at the BBQ

or indeed replacing'vital fluids at the bar.

■ The winners were ‘Phat Boyz and

Slim’ - who had a clever'tactic; ~'th'e larger team members blocked the try line, whilst the lycra cladded slimmer players caused a diversion leaving The coast clear for the speedsters to run in the tries.. ‘K9 Plums’ were gallant runners -up’.;' All in all a good prelude to the season

proper and to be repeated nejrt year., : gRugby are looking in decent fettle for p.m;, old, new or lapsed players are Meanwhile at Littlemoor, along with-the forthcoming season.

Clitheroe Advertiser&TImes, Thursday, August 16,2012 Golf round-up

THE McDonald Portal Hotel was the venue for Clitheroe Golf Club Captain John Whowell’s away golf break with 40 members. Sunday’s Stableford was almost a

noh-event as a thunderstorm curtailed the action, but Craig Allison and Dave . ■Warner braved the elements to claim first prize.

. Nigel Fitton and Steve Credie both had birdie 2s in their short round and took the runners-up prize after- cards with Giles Shaw and Trevor Jones on the same mark. With the competitors suitably

refreshed, Monday’s Team Event on the Championship Course went down to the ■wire and was settled on the final hole. Norman Entwistle was slotting putts

in from all angles and Paul Wood found one of the few 2s of the day but it was Geoff Sutcliffe and Jeff Crowther who produced the cmdal five points on the 18th to seal victory over two teams who could only muster a paltry tw points on the last. Alan Hacking had a cracking back

nine including the only four-pointer on the day, but he and partners Chris 'Vines, Alf En^and and Nigel Fitton could not muster the extra point for gold. The 6th hole Lilleys Gallop brought the best out of Eddie McGarry and

. Dave Brown when they recorded the only seven-pointer of the day so along ■with Tony McGibbon and Steve Dean they took third prize with 78 points. Back at base, an eagle on the first and

■ six birdies on the front nine set up the Alex Cave, Gainy Thompson, Stephen Bayes partnership to win the Texas Scramble 'with an impressive nett 54. Malcolm Goldsworthy had to settle

for silver when he and the two Rileys, ‘ Mark and Tom finished one shot off the winners. Garry Speak,Mike Tattersall and

Mike Thompson thought it was all over ■with a dropped shot at the 9th but six birdies and an eagle on the return leg put them on the prize list in third. In Sundays Fourball, Phil Bishop

and Ron Higson were out of the medal places until Higson birdied the 13th and produced a storming finish with 17 points on the last six for a 44-point win ning total. The experienced Colin Mustoe and

John Wetton blended well and returned a level par back nine but finished one point short to take second place Peter Clayton hit the jackpot -with the

only recorded 2 on the day. The Ladies’ Mail on Sunday dream

came to an end when they lost at Willow Valley Golf Club in round eight last Saturday. So near to the final and another sporting achievement for the Ribble Valley, but it was not to be. Some remarkable scores popped up

in the Ladies’ Fourball Betterball last week, and none better than the 51-point

jjfcwinning total by the delightflil Judith |Wooley and Elaine Grindrod. Jane Hoyle and Pam Lavery almost

fjnade it to the top but finished second, sjust one point behind. Judith Bishop got a real fillip when

tshe partnered Jan Walsh into third place tafter cards with Wiswell’s Maureen Cox [and Pat Brennan, both pairs scoring 47. Kris Baldwin and Jan Burrows'

[returned a creditable 45 points and jMarie Finney had the only 2 of the day Ion the 8th. Tom Forrest added another trophy to

his cabinet when he won the President’s Prize for Juniors with a gross 76. David Robinson took the best Nett

tion, at Stonyhurst Park Golf Club on Saturday was won by the dynamic duo of Wiggins and Hodkinson with 42 stable-' ford points. Was it Bradley relaxing after winning his cycling time trial gold medal, I hear you ask? No, it was club member Keith, who
