IT is all over as they say... only on this time there were thousands
of people on the "pitch" -this being the Solent and Southampton
Water where hundreds of boats joined in and formed a flotilla
of supporting vessels as Robin
Knpx-johnston led the Clipper fleet home in his iconic ketch Suhaili
(the one that took him solo non stop around the world over 40 years ago).
As the last race (15) set off from
Den Helder, in Holland, just one ’ point separated Singapore from De Lage Lariden, who were fighting for the final coveted podium place
of third overall in the race. First place had already been
secured by Gold Coast Australia, with Visit Finland safe in second, so the real scrap was for third.
It boiled down to this: after
spending all day Saturday and the early hours of Sunday racing around a triangular course off the Isle of White, Singapore and DLL
crossed the finish line seemingly glued together and only 100 yards

Singapore got the nod, putting her in second place for race 15 and,
.
crucially, ahead of DLL. So, after 51 weeks, six continents,
eveiy major ocean, and more than 40,000 nautical miles Singapore was on the final race podium in
. overall third place. What a magnificent achievement
and what a party there was to follow!
To cap it all, we had cloudless
skies and warm sunshine. I amyeiy proud to be a crew
, member of CV7 Singapore, have made some great friends, have
■ more memories than I can begin to reconcile just now and enjoyed
an experience that will never be forgotten. Only now that it's all over can I
begin to reflect on this amazing adventure which began over three
years ago when I signed up to have a go.
. To all of my friends, family and supporters I say a big thank you, it's been the best thing I've done in - my life... so far.

THERE are two ways to look at using colour in the garden.
You could stick to set colour schemes like whites,
blues and pinks, or maybe reds, yellows and oranges. However you don't have to follow these rules to be successful. You will find that a lot of plants with similar coloured flowers, flower at the same time. There are a lot of pinks and other soft colours in the garden in early summer, and towards the end of the year there always seems to be a dominance of yellow flowered plants around! J h e great joy of using Heleniums is the colours
that they give you to choose from, they are all fieor and they really stand out, from the clearest of yellows, to lovely burnt orange through to rich, deep reds. These colours blend in particularly well
with the vibrant Crocosmia colours, but also with many other plants as well. Heleniums don't mind a moist soil, which is
plentiful this year, and they will thrive in a sunny or partially shaded location. Divide eveiy three years to succeed and a good tip is when you have an established clump to use the "Chelsea Chop" technique. But only chop the back half of the clump; this will make the front part flower as usual, then when finished chop the front half down as the
back part of the clump comes to flower. The plant will also grow much more compact so ori taller varieties Chelsea chop the whole clump in May to create a shorter, stockier clump. Looking back at the idea of using similar colours,
just look at planting patches where yellows, reds brown up
- like vvith your plants, and not enough sun will not give you the optimum colour. Now if
. growing them in pots (as they make fine specimens on any
. patio!) just make sure they - don't diy out as this will also cause browning on the leaves,
- and one other cause can be if they are in a veiy windy location, so a sheltered partially shaded location for them is ideal!
Is there any plants rabbits don't like?

After having a group of three rabbits running around the nurseiy this year, we are well in the know of the do's and don'ts. The one plant that was not touched was the Heucheras, we had heard that
they didn't like the taste before and we have now found this ■ out for real!
Jobs to do
1 - Turn the compost heap! Get out the fork and turn over
the compost in your compost heap, you will find it starting to break down in the centre and this helps speed up the
process and gives a better rate of success.
.
2 -Layer Rhododendrons To easily propagate these,
take a low branch, scratch the . underside of the bark and clip it down to the ground using a
U-shaped piece of wire, then lightly cover in compost, leave until two springs' time and you
: will have another plant ready to •transplant!
3 — Pick infected rose leaves
, Pick off any leaves infected with mst or blackspot to reduce damage to the rest of the plant, put them in the dustbin or bum.
4 - Water plant pots Even though rain is plentiful.
across.the whole border,
and oranges flower together, but around them can be an array of plants that flower at a different time
of year but in pink, white and blue. I am a strong believer that most colours go
together nirely and it's great to just experiment when planting and get some real combinations as
well as the odd possible clash! B I B Y o u n g Gardener of the Year .5

water your plant pots at least once weekly as the sun is veiy powerful and plants in full leaf
can easily dry out at this time of year.
5 - Collect and sow seed It's a great way of getting
hundred of freebies from just a single plant. It may not come true to type, but collect it and sow now and wait and see what
unusual combinations you have appear!
