Diabetic group ‘pumps' a consultant for advice
GUEST speaker at the meet ing of Ribble Valley Diabetic Group was Dr Margaret Glew, a diarotic consultant at Royal Blackburn HospitaL She spoke about insulin
pumps, saying they mimic the body actions and can be pro grammed for high acth’e daj'S and la2y days. She added that they are very
flexible but also very costly and are now the size of a credit card, so that the patient can lead as near a normal life as possible. Before a patient can receive one they have to meet a strict
i l '
selection programme. Their diabetic control must have had disabling hyj>os and be reoc- curring and they must be will ing to adhere to the training programme, which takes six weete. The consultant outlines the
education programme with as sistance from a sp>ecialist nurse and dietitian, and during a trial
. period of two weeks their con trol has to shcjw improvement, because not all patients are suitable for a pump. Dr Glew replied to the many
questions with helpful an swers.

“Once again, we are indebted , to John Austin and members of
captain, John Allott, led the winning team home. He said: “The weather was a
bit unpredictable - I think we played four seasons in one day

fund-raising events golf days each year. In December 2011 it presented a cheque for more than £12,000 to the foundation.
WHEN Judith Kippax’s carer made a joke about taking up a"gruelling cy cling challenge, she did not expect to be taken up on her offer. Now 80-year-old Judith, who is a resi
dent of the Manor House Nursing Home, Chatburn, has cycled the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats and back again - on an exercise bike. Judith, who is originally from Simonstone, cycled a total of 1,748 miles on the electric bicycle within the comfort of the nursing home.
The mileage was being recorded on a
map of the British Isles, placed next to her electric bike, complete with a sticker fea turing a cycle to show her location. She started this epic journey on August
26th and completed it last month, rais ing £700, which will be split between the Stroke Association and the residents’ so cial fund. A former pupil of Clitheroe Royal
Grammar School, Judith always enjoyed sports, especially tennis and hockey. In lat er life she continued to pursue her sport

ing interests, but suffered two strokes, the first in 2007, when her fingers were af fected, and the second on Mother’s Day in 2008, when she lost most of the feeling in her right arm and leg. A spokesman for Manor House said:
“Judith has been a resident for two years and we are all extremely proud of her achievement. In fact, she is like a celebrity here now.” • Anyone wishing to donate towards
Judith’s cycling challenge is asked to call 01200441394.
