or many music fans the growl ing vocals of Hugh Cornwell represented their introduction to new wave music and the punk

rock explosion. As guitarist, singer and songwriter

with the Stranglers he met with enor mous success, having 10 hit albums and 21 top 40 singles, penning the raw- edged No More Heroes, the brooding Peaches and the melodic pop sound of

Golden Brown. "I'm intensely proud of what we did,

the Stranglers was a great apprentice

ship," said Cornwell. "For me. Golden Brown is the best of

the lot, I love that song. It took me 10 ■

minutes to write. "It was a big hit in 1982 and what's

been lovely it is still very popular. "Peaches was used in Sexy Beast,

the film with Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley.

rang ers s "I went to the cinema to see it and I

nearly fainted when I saw that because no-one had told me Peaches was being used, and there it was being played right at the start of the film. "I heard No More Heroes recently and

it sounded timeless. "That's special, you know. "Some of the Stranglers' music has defied time, I think, the songs are still

resonant today. "The early Stranglers sound certainly

represented that era, when there was a lot of discontent in the country." Cornwell split from the men in black

the day after they played a sell-out show at Alexandra Palace in London in 1990. "At the end I'd had enough, we'd

grown apart as people," he said. "We were in a band together, but our

lives had become very separate." For the previous two decades, though,

he has carved out a prolific solo career, publishing two books, one a very enter taining autobiography entitled A Multi tude of Sins, and is currently putting the finishing touches to his second novel.

formances from the finalists of the recent inter-schools talent competition GRAB: The Event. So popular was the three night run of shows that all were sold out, so the birthday night provides an opportunity for those who missed out to hear the win ning act, Ribblesdale High School year 7 pupil James Holt (pictured right), and run ners-up Imogen Storey, of St

h e Grand celebrates its third birthday this coming weekend with a fitting medley of

Augustine's RC High School and Shannon Bond, also of Ribblesdale High School. There will also be a show

case from participants of The Grand's Backstage P.A.S.S Saturday stage school, a performance from The Grand Choir and a headline slot for jazz and blues pianist John Wickham (a former pupil of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School) who will performing at the end of the night with

his new trio. Tickets for The Grand's

a wave "Even now, people tend to confuse me

with the Stranglers. "People perhaps don't realise that

when you're in a group it's a combina tion of personalities. "People think I might be more punk

than I am. "But even thinking that we were a

punk band is a bit of a misconception. "I love writing. The book is nothing to

do with music. It is a thriller set in the art markets of London. I'm very excited

about it." As a special bonus to fans, Hugh will

perform Fan Choice Encores which can be voted for at www.hughcornwell.com.

The five songs with the most votes will

end the evening. Support act The Brothers of Brazil will

be playing in the middle of the set. The brothers performed Stranglers song Hanging Around with Hugh on

Brazilian tv last year. See Hugh Cornwell at The Grand on
