IN theory a MINI'with a diesel engine sounds great, but to date the draw of the 1.6-Iitre petrol engine co­ developed between Peugeot and BMW has proved more compelling for the majority


of MINI customers. That may be about to change


with the launch of the 143bhp Cooper SD, a diesel model that gets to 60mph in 7.8 sec­ onds yet returns 65.7mpg. This could be the most complete MINI yet. Is there a more complete


supermini package than the MINI Cooper SD? It’s hard to think of one.

not be served without a healthy side order of exuberance. You will need to be pretty


eagle-eyed to spot the way the Cooper S badges have morphed into Cooper SD items. Otherwise this hot die­ sel hatch looks for all the world like its petrol-powered coun­ terpart. Even the exhausts, usually a giveaway on diesel cars, appear ostensibly similar. The Copper SD gets the full gamut of go-faster bits and


safety gear that feature on ex­ isting Cooper S models. Fitted as standard on Cooper SD ver­ sions specified with the 16in. alloy wheels are run-flat tyres. These have a range of at least 90 miles after a puncture and, of course, negate the need for a spare wheel, freeing up valu­ able space in the boot. The reason keen drivers will


love the Cooper SD is simple -torque. The first new MINI to get a two-litre engine, it is a se­ rious piece of kit. The 143bhp


power output seems only mild­ ly impressive at first glance, but the twisting muscle this engine serves up takes some beating. At just 1750rpm, it generates 305 Nm, which is more than a Porsche Cayman, and it be­ stows the kind of overtaking ability even the petrol-engined ‘S’ would find hard to live with. The sprint to 60mph of 7.8

els, tum-in is instant, grip tena­ cious, body control excellent, the brakes well up to the task. The steering is not as meaty as on first generation cars and all­ round visibility can be an issue, but the MINI remains a very entertaining steer. And the diesel engine in this


one does not detract from that 1 one jot.

The range is weighted towards


[diesel cars and comprises a 1.6 litre I and a 2.0-litre TDl, in either


40 PS or 170 PS flavours. Petrol engines are also offered,


■with a 122 PS 1.4-litre TSl, a 160 p S 1.8-litrcTSI and a 210 PS 2.0- litre unit. Performance from most of the


diesels is relatively sedate. This is b very big car after all and the 1.6 litre TDI, for instance, takes over [12 seconds to get you to 62mph from a standing start, though the more sprightly 2.0 litre TSI will cut that to just over eight seconds. ! Except for the 105 PS 1.6 TDI diesel, this Passat can be speci­ fied with a choice either of man-


[ual transmission or the highly re­ garded twin-clutch DSG gearbox, which offers a full automatic mode ir lightning quick sequential pad- le shifts. Plus, if your growing family or


your job as a sales rep has forced you into the Passat but you still yearn for the sprightliness of the Golf GTI, you can opt for the Volkswagen’s XDS electronic transverse differential. The driving feel is far more re­


sponsive with XDS as it reduces understecr and gives greater trac­ tion in the wet. The feel of the drive is further enhanced by the rear suspension being isolated by subframes, which cut noise levels in the cabin and make for a much more comfortable ride. If comfort is key, avoid the Sport model as its lower profile tyres and firmer suspension make the ride notably busier. The styling of the Passat has al­


ways been rather plain and under­ stated, but this seventh generation model pares back the design still


further to a point where it looks coolly minimalist. The clutter has been ruthlessly excised from its silhouette and the few details that have appeared, such as LED day­ time running lights and a sliver of chrome on the rear bumper, have been tastefully integrated. It is very much a case of less is more. The Volkswagen Passat estate


could not do a better impression of buttoned-down German rectitude if it tried. It is a bottom line sort of car: if you need solid and sensible, look no further. The diesel models in particular


make all kinds of sense and arc priced a lot more keenly than you would imagine. If you had thought Passats were unaffordable it is time to have another look at those cost of ownership figures. It really is hard to go wrong with the latest Passat.
