THE Peugeot 508 is one of those cars that is far more accom plished than you ex
pect. With great ride quality
and tons of equipment, the eco-focused 1.6-litre diesel offers plenty of space inside and g re a t; refinement. ; What it loses in styling
individuality compared to the 407, it more than makes up in technical ex cellence. . The prime expectatioh
of a larger French car is that it should ride well. If it cannot overcome ; this obstacle then itis up against it from the get ,
go. Spared the uprated
suspension and bigger wheels of the 2.2-Iitre GT range-topper, the 1.6 e-HDi passes this test with flying colours. It rides superbly and

‘ . Aggressive looks that blend SUV and
FAP 112bhp 1.6, 140 and 163bhp 2.0-litre HDi units. The 156bhp petrol en
gine is a gem and the 2.0- litre diesel units are also well worth auditioning. But the headline econ
omy and emission figures for the 508 are the re sponsibility of this 1.6-li- tre model fitted with the EGC gearbox. Unfortunately, it is far
from the best example of its ilk, managing to be slow-witted and jerky on manyupchanges. Yes, you can learn to
drive around its foibles by feathering the throttle when you sense it is about to execute a gearchange, but I am a strong believer in technolo^ adapting to us and not vice versa. Should you instead
decide on a traditional manual ’box instead, you will find the six-speeder
is a sweet-shifting unit. At 4.79m long, the 508
saloon is quite a big unit, adding almost five cen timetres to the lenjgth of the old 407. This does not tell the
whole story though, the 508’s massively longer wheelbase ensuring that the cabin genuinely does feel like a class above, especially when it comes to rear seat accommoda tion. The boot is a good size
at 473 litres, and with the rear seats in place it in fact offers more carrying capacity than its 508 SW estate sibling. The Peugeot 508 is an
impressive proposition, but it could well become one of those cars that ap pears technically compe tent without generating that crucial spark of de sirability. The styling is hand-
some without being at tention-grabbing, and although it does most things extremely well there are really only one or two criteria - possibly standard equipment pro vision and the technical excellence of its engine line-up - where the 508 is at the very top of its class. . So it is hardly an emo
tional purchase. Appealing to the head
rather than the heart could well pay dividends when trying to seduce business buyers though. The ultra-efficient
engines, the attractive pricing and the fact that it looks a more expensive car than it actually is all weigh in its favour. Give the Peugeot 508
a fair crack and you will discover that few cars in its class are anything like as well-rounded.
sports car design cues will help it stand out from rival small cars.
Although 4x4 models are offered, the
Juke is designed primarily to offer a sporty drive on the road.
To look at the Juke, you would think
it had just come off a stage of the Paris Dakar Rally. The big wheels, extended ground clear
ance and body protection clearly hint at some all-terrain ability, but much of the ef fort that has gone into developing the car was actually focused on creating a sporty feel on the road. The MacPherson strut front suspension
of the Juke have a basic torsen beam at the rear, the all-wheel-drive models get a spe cial multi-link set-up, of a type not usually found on a car this compact. The 4x4 set-up itself,is Nissan’s ad
vanced All-MODE 4x4-1 torque-vectoring system. As well as distributing power be tween the front and rear axles, it can also split drive between the two rear wheels, re ducing understeer and increasing general stability in corners. Whether front or rear-wheel-drive, the
Juke has the ground clearance and chunky tyres to help it cope with the high kerbs and traffic calming measures that litter our urban centres. Still, as you begin to realise when throw

that unpromising statistics like these can still be converted into a car that delivers a' satisfying steer. Nissan has had to' adopt a pretty stiff
set-up to make it all work, but it is a bear able compromise, creating a car that rides not too badly around town and rolls little through tighter bends. And you can adjust its demeanour to suit
