AS if a gruelling 170-mile, coast-to-coast bike ride for charity wasn’t enough to contend with, cyclists, from Clitheroe-based Total Foodservice managed to pedal a further eight miles out of the way and still make it to the finish line. The 10-strong team spent three days
cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington, raising £4,871 for Crossroads Care in the process. But while battling steep hills, driving
rain and bitterly cold winds; the intrepid gang managed to add another eight miles to their total. Four miles can be accounted for by a

IF you are really interested - in encouraging wildlife into your garden then why not consider installing a pond. It can be done at any time of year, bu t if you do it at this time it may attract passing frogs looking for a place over winter and also will be set up ready to develop in

few important points worth highlighting. Firstly, even if it’s only made from an upturned

need them for the early stages of their lives prior to emerg ing into the fresh air as adults; these include dragonflies, damselflies and mayflies. Then of course there are the amphib ians - principally frogs, toads and newts - all of which cannot breed without ponds. Birds can feed on the wildlife in and around a pond. But the prob lem is that many of our natural ponds are disappearing from the countryside due to neglect, drainage or pollution and consequently garden ponds are fulfilling an increasingly impor tant role in sustaining some of these wildlife populations. There are numerous books
useful to wildlife and why are they so important? Well there are many insects and other invertebrates that either spend their entire lives in ponds including certain types of beetle, snails etc. Many more

dustbin lid, a small pond is worth having, although at this
• scale it is likely to freeze up in the winter and hence be of less value. Any size is beneficial, but if the space is available, then go for something on a bigger scale if you want to cater for a wider range of species. The RSPB quote a surface area of over 15 square metres for great crested newts and over 50 square metres for many dragonflies! Secondly, do not introduce fish - they’re top of the food chain in a garden pond and will eat up tadpoles, ... damselfly larva and generally ’ most of the other wildlife. If you must have fish in your gar den then give them a separate- pond. Thirdly the pond edge is the most important part of the pond - it should be gently contoured, have plenty of veg etation and maximised if pos sible by making the shape very irregular. Frogs) newts and other creatures need to be able to get in and out easily, they need vegetation to give them protection and for egg laying, and also the shallow margins will allow an accidental visitor such as a hedgehog to escape without harm. A well planted pond will
quickly become an asset to any garden and don’t be surprised if you spend many an hour examining the progress of the tadpoles or watching out to see if the delicate damselflies are actually laying eggs in your very
own pond. ’
