As well as the regular family get-togethers, both have pursued separate careers away from the mi crophone. Marry became a graphic designer and sculptor and raised a family. Oliver Knight became a gardener. He maintained a link with folk music as a record produc er and sound engineer, but had to complete the recording of “A Bed of Roses”, a second album made with his mother Lai Waterson, on his own after her unexpected death in 1998. Thirteen years later and the spectre of Lai Waterson pervades this debut collaboration of her offspring.

The duo’s de but recording shows off Marry’s direct and poignant delivery of a lyric, at once nostalgic for the in nocence of childhood, then phleg matic as if portrayed by a neutral observer from a distance. Oliver Knight’s guitar settings are subtle and weave a soft fabric around his sister’s grainy voice. The use of string arrangements, some crafted by cousin Eliza Carthy, shows simi lar subservience to the vocal lines. Eliza is afforded centre stage on “The Loosened Arrow”, where she takes the lead voice. A modicum of co-collabora
