AN historic Ribble Valley trout farm is set for expansion after being purchased in a management buyout for an undisclosed sum.

Dunsop Trout Farm, which was established at Dun-

sop Bridge, Clitheroe, in 1926, has been purchased by Philip Mart and David Jones from previous owners, the Birtwistle family. Dunsop Trout Farm is one of the oldest in the UK

and acts as a restocking farm for brown and rainbow trout, replenishing fish supplies in rivers and reser voirs used by angling clubs. The business has three employees. Philip, who has been managing the farm since 2000,

said: “We currently produce around 45 tonnes of fish annually for restocking, but we want to grow the busi ness. As part of this buyout we arc looking to increase production, as well as exploring other expansion op portunities including a smoking house and farm shop, which would allow us to move into retail too.” Philip and David were advised on the purchase by the mergers and acquisitions team at Harrison Drury

Solicitors. David Filmer, associate at Harrison Drury Solici

tors, said: “This management buyout allows the previ ous owners to hand the business over to an experi enced team and Philip and David have exciting plans to move the business forward through additional

investment.” Dunsop Trout Farm was originally built for sea

trout as part of a compensation deal with the North West Water Authority (now United Utilities) after the fishes’ natural spawning grounds were flooded to make Stocks Reservoir at Slaidburn. The farm, which occupies six acres, remains one

of the few pieces of land in the local area not owned by either United Utilities or the Duchy of Lancaster

A new wood at Whitewell Whitewell Estate.

ANEW native woodland has been planted at the Whitewell Estate, belonging to the Duchy of Lancaster, with help from The Woodland Trust

The new five-acre wood saw 2,000

trees planted in February, with a mix of native tree species, under the Trust’s new MOREwoods pro gramme, which offer help, advice and, in some cases, funding to land- owners for woodland creation. Cadets from Lancashire Army

Cadet Force (ACF) and Air Train ing Corps (ATC) planted the wood

on the Duke of Lancaster’s land at Whitewell, as part of the CadetlSO Tree Planting Project to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the forma tion of the cadet forces. Colonel Frank Hewitt, the Wood

land Trust andCadet Forces co-ordi- nator, said: “Cadets from throughout the UK will have planted 150,000 trees between November 2009 and April 2011 as part of the Cadetl50 Tree Planting Project, carried out in partnership with the Woodland

Trust. “Cadets from Lancashire ACF and

ATC worked extremely hard to plant these trees in about four hours on

very difficult and steep terrain, but achieved a threefold aim; seeing it as an opportunity to make a signifi cant contribution to this project, to enhance the environment and to im prove the area for training purposes as well as enhancing it as an area of outstanding natural beauty.” The Woodland Trust is helping

and encouraging people to plant trees with the overall aim of dou bling woodland cover. The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 12% woodland cover compared to the European average of 44%. And in Lancashire, just 4.6% is covered by woodland. As

part of its campaign “More Trees, More Good”, the charity wants to plant millions of trees for the sake of wildlife and people, to combat climate change and improve our environment. Project manager Clare Olleren-

shaw said: “The Trust has ambitious aims to increase native tree cover. Interest is growing in managing trees for a wide variety of purposes and we really want to help people across the county plant trees. MOREwoods concentrates on smaller scale tree planting but we are keen to talk to landowners about larger scale op portunities too.”

New for this year is the Jubilee

Woods proj ect, through which ap plicants can plant a Jubilee Wood to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, or those with more than 60 acres can create a prestigious Diamond Wood, one of only 60 to,be planted across the UK. For schools and communities free tree packs are available. People can find out how to get involved in the Jubilee Woods project at www.moretreesmoregood. org.uk/jubilee To find out more about the

MOREwoods project, see www. MoretreesMoregood.org.uk/planting or call 0845 293 5689.
