Fair deal for all
I believe that it is vital that we have a voting system that is fair, not one where, according to some recent pro jections, the party that comes third in terms of total votes gets twice as many seats as the parly thatcomes second. It is only when we totally reform
our voting q^stem that we will ensure that we never have to endure another MPs’ expenses scandal. This is be cause the new system that we propose will mean no MP will have a safe seat, where they can act as if they are be yond reproach from the electorate. I also want to see all constituents given the power to sack corrupt MPs. - ■ In addition to making the voting
;
system fairer. Liberal Democrats want fairer taxes that put money back in your pocket and we would ensure that: most people would not pay tax on the first £10,000 they earn - cutting most tax bills by £700.
- . ; .We also want to see a fair chance for lition of university tuition fees.
/ . We want to see a fair deal for our ; armed forces by giving them the pay and equipment they deserve, which will be funded by cutting waste at the t MoD in Whitehall.

r- Up to 1,000 women are expected to take part in the Silver Starlight Walk, a 10-mile night-time trek, which raises much-needed
. funds for the facility, on May 22nd at 10 p.m. And this year, entrants
are asked to wear tiaras, wigs and glitter to bring a touch of sparkle to the streets.- T h e fu lly marshalled
walk will start at the Soc- cerdom'e, Haslingden Road, Guide, Blackburn,
and also the D.W. Gym in Mayson Street.
Denise Gee, events
organiser at the hospice, said: “This year, we want to bring a real element of fun and occasion to the walk, and as it’s la dies only what better way to dress up and have fun while you raise money for East Lancashire Hospice. “The night-time walk is
always very special, and as all the walkers are taking part for a common pur pose, the sense of occa sion is magnificent. “We want the walk to be
as girly and sparkly as pos sible, so please use your imagination. Whether it’s a wig or spray-on glitter - we don’t mind, as long as it’s fun and sparkly.” The aim of the walk
, is to raise money for the East Lancashire Hospice,
which provides care and support for the people of Ribble Valley, Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndbum. The hospice’s opera
tional costs are more than ; £2.8m. each year, and it relies heavily on dona tions and fund-raising events to continue provid-; ing this care.'.;:/” -, ■ -.• Last year, more", than-
800 walkers took part, raising more than £80,000 for the hospice.' To join in the walk, you
need to fill in a registra tion form, which is avail able from the hospice or the DW Gym. Call 01254 342847 or e-mail: denise.

Chef s return to his old school
CHEF Michael Heathcote returned to his old school to give sbrth form pupils a demonstration of his culi- naryskills. Michael, who is chef proprietor at
the Duke of York, Grindleton, -vis ited Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, accompanied by his head chef Rob Geldeard, an other QEGS “old boy”. Their demonstration concen
trated on how preparing good food need not be difficult, time-consum ing or expensive. Andrew Priory, head of the Low
er Sixth at QEGS, lives in Clitheroe and had invited Michael and Rob to give the demonstration. He said that the event was an ex
cellent complement to the “survival cooking” course, which the students undertake in school as part of their
preparation for life at university. Michael gave tips both on the ingre dients themselves and in the man agement and buying skills needed to run a successful catering estab lishment. The students were also able to
watch Rob prepare dishes ranging from burgers to a lamb shoulder and from steak and ale casserole to fish pic.. ■
