VAUXHALL’S Astra once might have suffered a slight inferiority complex com pared to its Ford equivalents, the Focus. This is longer the case, asthe fifth genera tion Astra is a car that competes on its own terms.
•■ ; - Offering a level of fit and finish that
eludes Ford’s finest, the Astra feels prop- erly premium, witli even the lower speci fication models reviling its competitors. With a strong engine line up and sharper driving manners than ever before, the As tra is no poor r e l a t i o n . • . Being one of the best looking cars in
the family hatch sector, it also possesses that crucial spark of desirability. The five-door Astra hatch was closely
followed with an estate version. As new product launches went, this was a uiggie.
■ With the Meriva and Zafira taking care of the utilityroles, the Astra was given free rein to be a little sassier than many rivals. Vauxhall then launched the highly antici pated Sporthatch which proved an instant'
■ hit, followedby the VXR sports variant. •• Subsequently, I the Astra range was
slightly revised, with some minor cosmet ic
changes. The main differences however- came underthe bonnet.'.The 1.6 TWIN-/: PORT petrol engine was up-rated from 105 to 115PS,' while'the:170PS 2.0-litrcc turbocharged petrol unit was replaced by a

erplant. With clever packaging and a long
wheelbase the Astra has substantial inte rior space and is one of the biggest cars in its class. Its sloping rooflinc looks as if it will pinch rear headroom, but look a little closer and you will notice that both leg and shoulder room are in another league. Terry Davies, general sales manager
at Perrys Vauxliall, said: ‘'The Astra has for many years been a very' important car for Perrys Vauxhall, with its predecessors often being cars that weren’t sufficiently special enough to appeal to private buy- ■ ers. The fifth generation model changed all of that, becoming car that people even now are proud to be seen driving.”. The fifth generation Vauxhall Astra

vehicle was being frowned upon by the public for its perceived environmental profligacy and a certain overbearing attitude that seemed out o f step with ' the times. ......... . It did not help that the
Q7 was designed to be one of the biggest and most ostentatious 4x4s of the lot. ■ On face value, the latest
model is not exactly apol ogetic, but beneath the surface it is an altogether friendlier proposition. : Four engines are avail

below a 328bhp version of the same engine with ftilly 440Nm of torque between 2,900 and 5,300rpm. Of greater relevance
to the UK market is the 3.0-litre V6 TDI die-
' sel. This engine is avail able in standard or Clean Dicsclguiscs, with the later using advanced com bustion and exliaust after- treatment technologies to boost efficiency further clean up its act. Finally, there is the
muscular 335bhp 4.2-li tre V8 TDI powcrplant,
' which comes bristling with 800Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,750rpm. It is the liveliest Q7 getting to 60mph with a time of 6.4s and a I50mph top speed.
. The more powerful of the 3.0-litre petrol en gines has a 6.9s sprint that is faster than the old V8 petrol unit and a 152mph top speed. There arc small aircraft
carriers that would cut a less commanding dash than the Q7 if parked on a suburban driveway and the latest facelifted mod-

spit-you-out front end is enhanced by more shape ly bumpers incorporating under-body protectors, while the rear gets a natty set of LED light clusters.
. Inside, the instrument; : cluster and the controls have been redesigned and nudged up market. ' The Q7 is 5,086mm long and very nearly two

Audi’s usual high stand ards and the control inter face remains arguably the most user-friendly in the sector. Tliere are three rows of

seats that slide and fold in the usual MPV-like fash ion. Audi claims 28 seat ing and loading configura tions are available in the Q7 and the seats in the second row are adjustable for forc/aft movement. This allows Audi to not
only lay claim to the most generous second row leg- room in the class, but also - with the second row
slid forward and the rear- folded - to also pinch first prize for luggage capacity, a huge 775 litres. There was a time when
manufacturers of large ' SUVs could successfully gloss over environmental and running cost issues, but in today’s climate' even buyers at this end of the market arc keeping a closer eye on the bottom line. The latest Q7 takes
steps to up its perform ance in this regard with its TDI Clean Diesel system
that is present on the 3.0 TDI Clean Diesel. . Fittingly, given the Q7’s
bulk, Audi has employed technology that has been widely used in heavy com mercial vehicles for some time. This injects a urea solution called AdBlue into the exhaust gasses before they emerge from. the tailpipe. . ' The chemical splits
harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless water and nitrogen. Together with the ad vanced combustion tech-

nology, kinetic energy recovery and exhaust gas, recirculation, it helps the Q7 clean up its act. Combined economy of 33.6mpg and emissions compliant with the Euro VI standard are achieved by the 3.0 TDI Clean Die- sel car. There are downsides
to Q7 ownership that you will have to live with on'a day-to-day basis. The thing is huge. At
over five metres long, you will get used to driving past many parking spaces
■looking for one you can ease its bulk into. You will also attract the ire of the eco-warriors should you drive it in town, which can be tiresome. Is the Q7 worth it?
The desperate protests in the office when we were “invited” to give our car
'back to the press office _spoke volumes. Here is a vehicle that
is big and clever without ever coming across as an obnoxious smart aleck. I t’s a trick few big 4x4s pull off.
