•JOB cuts could be on the cards at a Ribble Valley hospital as it tries to plug a f5m. hole in its fi nances.
, Crisis talks are being held with , unions after it was revealed that 220 jobs could be lost at Calderstones NHS Trust. ■
-M.
■ The possible job losses at the ■ Whalley hospital come as a result
. of a cost-cutting measure to save around £5m. over the next three years - the equivalent of 220 jobs. .
; : -And unions fear this is just the be- : ginning of major cutbacks in front line NHS staff. Calderstones NHS Trust employs
over 1,500 workers. It provides a specialist service to people with a learning disability, ineluding in-pa-, tient assessment and treatment and community-based services across the North West. .
; Speaking to us earlier this week, ■ Mr Graham Jowett, director of : work service and development at theTrust, stressed it was early days yet and nothing had been con firmed. , He explained that talks were be ing held with union representatives
and that officials were looking at modernisation changes and avoid ing job losses by looking at other options first. He commented: “We are no different from any other NHS organisation or public sec tor body and we do face significant challenges over the next few years. “From our point of view, it is pub
lic money and we have always got to make sure we are spending that money wisely and appropriately. “The bottom line is we are actu
ally trying to protect jobs, but we have got to make sure we have got the right staff in the right jobs at the right time to deliver an efficient
.service. . “What we have here is a nursing
workforce where some of the work ing practices have not changed for decades ,and in order to develop greater efficiency together we need to look at how we deploy our staff. “We are not going to do anything
that puts service users at risk.” - A UNISON representative said: “We are very worried about the
• cuts. They significantly reduce the number of qualified and support staff during the night period.
, “We are. also concerned that these cuts are just the beginning of major cuts in frontline NHS staff.”
