Starririg rple for talented young thespian Oscar
, STARDOM beckons for a talented Clitheroe boy who is starring in a classic 1940s play based on real events from the early 20th Century.
. Eleven-year-old Oscar Dummer, who attends Pendle
Primaiy School, is playing the lead role in “The Winslow Boy” at
the.Thwaites Empire Theatre, in Blackburn. ■
- Oscar, who is the son of Jamie and Rose Dummer, will play Ronnie Winslow, a cadet at the Royal Naval College; who is accused of the theft of a five-shilling' - postal order.
'' When he returns home afte'r being dismissed, his
•proud father vows to clear his name. As the case pro ceeds through the courts, and even to the Houses of
' Parliament, the events take their toll on the health and loves of the family.. .
- . ■ ' ' ' , The play was inspired by an actual event, which set a
. legal precedent; the case of Stonyhurst College alumni • , George Archer-Shee, a cadet at Osborne in 1908, who
' .was accused of stealinga postal order from a fellow ca- ; ' det; His elder brother, Major Martin Archer-Shee, was ! convinced of his innocence, and persuaded his father ' (also called Martin) to engage lawyers."
- The most respected barrister of the day, Sir Edward
. Carson, was also persuaded of his innocence and insist- . ed on the case coming to court. On the fourth day of the trial; the Solicitor General accepted that Archer-Shee was innocent, and ultimately the family was paid com- - : pensation.
' - -•.■: , , -
until Saturday. Tickets are available by calling the box = office on 01254 685500.
Last night saw the opening of the play and it will run ' " "
'- Oscar is also a student at The Mary Waddingtori
. School of Dancing and has previously starred as the son '' of Macduff in a production of Macbeth at the Lowrv in Salford.

DON’T mess with the Mayor - she’s a brown belt in Judo! This little-known fact
about Ribble Valley’s new Mayor, Coun. Lois Rimmer,
was revMled as she took on the chain of office on -Tues day night. Succeeding Coun. Beverley Jones, she will be supported in the role by her husband Gordon, as the - Mayor’s Consort. '
'; • ' _ A former midwife, health
visitor and magistrate, Coun. Rimmer has represented the I^ngho and Dinckley ward
since 2007 during her second stint as a local ward council-' lor.
Born and brought up in . Blackburn,
she.moved to
Downham in 1961 andyac-; cording to Coun. Joyce Hol- gate, who nominated her council colleague as mayor, at one time lived in a haunt-- ed house.
’ Speaking of Coun. Rim
mer, Coun. Holgate said: “What you see with Lois is what you get.” And in seconding the nomination, Coun. Stuart
' Hirst added: “When Lois says will you second my nom ination, what she means is • -youwill!”
' ' : Referring to Coun. Rim-•
mer’s prowess at martial arts he said the message was “do not mess with the Mayor”. He also called on her to “en hance and preserve” all the features which make the Rib ble Valley such a gem, during
her year as civic ambassador for the borough.
: Coun. Rimmer^ a moth- er-of-three, first joined the. borough council in 1999 and . represented Langho and Bil lington for four years, retum-
; ing to the chamber again as ward councillor for Langho and Dinckley. In her acceptance speech
she called on councillors of all political allegiances to work together, saying she be lieved the threat of region- alisation was still “very, veiy”
real: “It makes no difference which party holds power, there is a belief in Westmin ster and beyond that big is better and may save money. “Ribble Valley Borough
Council could be at risk of being swallowed by the larg er councils that surround us. My view is that if the wheel is not broken don’t fix it.
• “wRibble Valley was cre
ated almost 37 years ago and has a reputation that is the envy of many. We need to work together and think
together in order to protect our status quo.” During her year in office
Coun. Rimmer will be sup porting her chosen charities - Ribble Valley Scouts and Guides and The Sanctuary
-o f Healing in Langho. At the annual meeting of the council, which took place
■in the council chamber on Tuesday night, Coun. Simon Hoare was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor and his wife Grace was named as the Deputy Mayoress.

SCHOOL pupils in Lan cashire are being'given safety tips ahead of Walk to School Week; which starts next Monday, May
/17th./jiArAA;/-:;;,/-;''' ■This year’s theme is
“Walk Your Way’:-and
• parents are being encour- i aged to. pass on naviga tion skills, to children. L^cashire County Coun cil’s Road Safety Group is giving pupils and parents advice on how they can enjoy safer walks while they discover their local a r e a .
/ Road ; Safety Group
deputy manager. Clare - Farrer said: “Walking to and from school is a ; great .wayTor you. and your child to exercise and : spend time together while '■ also reducing traffic o n / the roads. ■ ■' ,
': /
. “If your child is familiar with the area where you live and recognises the safest places to cross, they will be safer when they are old enough to travel alone. We’ve put together this advice to help you en
joy the walk to and from school.” ■ • ' Top tips for children:
. • Always plan your
journey before you set off, as this will help you to avoid getting lost and minimise road crossings. • If you are looking
after someone younger than you, always hold their hand when crossing the road. , • Remember to use
traffic crossings where you can! . .. • Help other road us
ers to see you by wear ing something bright. Fluorescent materials are good in daylight and ■ at dusk,'whereas reflec-. tive materials work well at night.'
. \
Top tips for parents:' • Find out if any of
your child’s friends live in the area so they can share the journey.'/ • Point out safe places
to cross on local roads and highlight any dangers. • Lead by example -
if ./
you run across the road or cross when the “red man” ; is showing, your child will too. ' '■
• Talk about the im
portance o f not using a mobile phone o f texting
while crossing the road;- • Remind your child .
that they cannot hear traffic if listening;,to mu sic through earphones, or / see it properly if wearing a large hood.. For more informa- •
