■ CLITHEROE RUFC entertained' : old friends in pre-season matches at Littlemoor for . the . las t f two Saturdays.' - - On the 15th, former Clitheroe ■
player James McAlonan returned with the third team squad from his new club Broughton Park.'. And a t the weekend Carnforth
took in a glorious Ribble Valley afternoon. ; Both matches ended in victories ,
for Clitheroe, initially seeing off Broughton Park 23-18 in a match which had the usual hallmarks of a pre-season tie.
' The game was interspersed with. flashes of good forward play and-
blossoming youth set up a t the
slick handling from the backs, but. it would be fair, to
say.the squad. learned more then they achieved. , s.
"1 On the score sheet was the ageless Andrew rThomber, full back James Dickinson, club captain.Oliver McEntyre and centre Paul Callaghan. ; The match marked the coming of
age for some of the members of th e : Clitheroe Senior Colts set up, with an excellent debutant performance at scrum half for Joe Basquil.' And there r was an equally
competent forward debut for Mark Pearcy - both products of the
? club. In the Carnforth match, a ' stronger squad was assembled, with - the Littlemoor squad running out winners 23-14. •.Tries came- from prop Ben
Graves, centre Matt Bartle and full back Lafranceschina, who touched down to complement his great' place kicking. McEntsre commented after the two matches: “There was a lot to ' like about the pre-season games,
, and while there was potential for us to score more and concede less, pre-season matches are all about learning. “I t was great to see the Colts'
come through into the senior side • and really make their mark. =' .- That', combined 'with;:.the. eye-catching return of several. former players and a couple of new faces, means'there is real pressure ' on places as we go into the,new.;
season." , ' “I t ’s is great for the
club.as no ;
one can afford to rest on their
laurels. ' • ■ “The areas to work a t training me the br^kdown, where more ball: needs to be- secured, and concentration in defence to take the right options. “However, I am looking forward ; to the start of the new season on

CLITHEROE tennis player Conor Bunting saw his Under-16 AEGON Junior National Championships campaign come to an end a fte r defeat in the quarter-final stages to Robert Carter from Essex. . The un-seeded player, who trains at the Bolton
K.-' r / - : \t>-
Arena, fought bravely against the fifth seed but eventually went down 5-7,6-1,6-3 at the West Hants . club in Bournemouth on Friday.
. Conor, who battled his way through a three-set-
match in the first round, had a more straight forward victory in round two against Samuel
Hutt.from Wiltshire.
_ But the quarter-finals proved to be a different
challenge, \vith Conor coming up against one of the tournament favourites. ■ " / . The British Junior National Championships is the
highest domestic accolade available to Britain’s most promising young players and past champions include the current men’s and women’s British number ones, Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong. “I ’m disappointed to have lost, especially as it got
quite close in the end and Robert is such a strong player,” said 15-year-old Conor. “I thought I’d played really well all week just on the
day my opponent played some great tennis and it was., just a shame that I couldn’t play as well as I felt like I . had done in the previous rounds.
: . . - . : >
“I ’ve had a really
good.tournament though so I , can’t be too disappointed.
■ - “I t has been a great week and the standard of tennis ll'lp
has been really high so I ’m looking forward to going home and getting back into training, as I definitely want to come back stronger at next year’s nationals and better this year’s result.’’, . ; - ’ , ■ . -
