Pupils celebrate moon landing at college
TO celebrate the 40th anniver sary of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, more than 40 pri mary school children attended the aimual physics fair at Stony- hurst College. - The children from St Michael and St John’s -RC P rim a ry ' School, Clitheroe, and St Joseph’s RC Primary . School, H u rs t Green, were split into four teams called “Buzz Aldrin” , “Apollo 11”,
“Rockets” - and
“Astronomers”. They -visited var ious “space stations”, -which each
had a different activity, located- around the college grounds. Activities included making and firing rockets, powered by Alka- Seltzer, and learning about tele-' scopes. ; One of the “space stations’’-,
was the famous observatory in the grounds of the college. Here, the children enjoyed watching a film about the first manned space missions and moon landings by NASA’s Apollo 11.
. .. . .
As a special treat a t the end of the morning, a large engine-pow
ered rocket, made by a group of
. pupils at Stonyhurst College, was launched from the Jesuit gardens
: by staff member Mr Hunter... To conclude the day, pupils
watched an end-of-term perform ance of “The P ira te s of Pen zance” by college pupils. , “The visiting pupils really enjoyed their day at Stonyhurst, and learning about outer space. I t ’s a fascinating subject th a t caught their, in te re s t ,”, said Katherine Walker, marketing director at Stonyhurst College.

LISTENING to the complete North-West Sound Archive, if doing it as a nine to five job with ■ a normal lunch break, would take a hundred years! ■. That was just one of the fasci- • nating .facts presented to
; Clitheroe Probus Club by guest speaker Mr Andrew Schofield, a t their meeting on August 7th., : ; : ' The .North West Sound
■Archive was founded in 1979 in ; order to record, collect and pre^ serve sound recordings relevant
to life in the North West of Eng-, land. After being set up in Man chester the archive moved to Clitheroe in 1982. • The speaker introduced a wide, variety of recordings, ranging
: from an Accrington Pals recollec tions of the battle of the Somme, through the start-up of the first: programmable computer in the 1940s the technical assistant resigned two days later because “there was no future in it”! Probus member Peter Garner
' gave the vote of thanks, remark ing how lucky, we were to have this treasure house on the doorstep. Clitheroe and District Probus
Club meets on the first and third : Fridays of the month, a t 10-45 a.m: in the Pendle Club, Lower gate, Clitheroe The summer lunch is to be held a t Sparth House Hotel on August 21st and the next
