I , DO il iTV, ?--T Pub’s leftovers to be put to good use

A VALLEY inn will be playing “swop sh o p ” with a local organic garden. From next month The Inn

a t Whitewell will be teaming up with Bumley-based charity Offshoots. A special service will see leftover food from the Ribble Valley hostelry collect ed and composted - Offshoots will then supply and deliver fresh organic produce grown on its site. The aim of the three-month

pilot project is to stop leftover food being wasted and instead

turned into valuable compost. I t is being funded by a (jom- munity Solutions grant in a bid to shape an efficient and cost effective service. “It is great to be able to sup

port an exciting project which closes the loop by using waste as a resource,” said Lancashire CRN co-ordinator Dawn Wel- ham, who administered the grant. “The outcomes of this pilot

will also help inform other projects so th a t similar part nerships between community

groups and charities can be developed with businesses all over Lancashire in the future.” Offshoots, a Groundwork Pen nine Lancashire permaculture project, is housed in the walled gardens of Towneley HaU in Burnley. For over seven years food

waste has been recycled on the site, b u t providing a profes sional service to the Inn a t WhiteweU will help ensure its long-term financial sustain ability and prove that commu nity enterprises can provide a

service as great, if not better, th an business service providers. .As a result of this scheme, knowledge will be used as part of ongoing work with businesses in the Forest of Bowland area through the Green Tourism Programme.
