How times change. When the. original Kia Sorento was launched in 2003, it was just in the nick of time to book a box seat for the

4x4 boom. It rode the crest of the wave

the worse with environmental concerns turning legislation and public opinion against large 4x4 vehicles. By the time Kia annoimced this latest Sorento as a replacement, SUV had become something of a dirty word. That led to some quick thinking from the Kia marketing department and a new designation for the Sorento. We're told this model is a CUV or Crossover Utility Vehicle. The concept of a “crossover”

which should also help on the Tanhac, but Kia still claims that a decent .level of off-road ability has been retained. ' The subtle retargeting of the

vehicle isn't a new one. What it actually means rather depends on what the vehicle is crossing over horn and to, but in common automotive industry parlance, it's used to refer to 4x4 vehicles that are designed primarily for road-going duties.. The idea of a 4x4 that can't do

to deliver these qualities without the expensive and heavy-duty off-road meclmnicals. That's the basic thinking behind the Kia Sorento 'CUV as well as other notables like Nissan's Murano and Mazda's CX-7. The crossover status assigned

In tenhs of torque, there's even less of a contest between these two power options. The petrol unit generates 225Nm at 4,000rpm while the diesel has 421Nm available from 1,800 to 2,500 rpm. Access to the cabin is also improved as the “hip-point” for the front and second row seats is lowered by 37 mm, the cabin floor is lowered by 32 mm and the second row near-side seats “double-fold” to allow easier entry and exit for third row pas sengers. For maximuni versatili ty when accommodating people and cargo, the Sorento's second row seat is split 60/40 and the optional third row seat is split 50/50. These seats' backrests fold

quite effective with a com bined fuel economy figure of 65mpg and a 115g/km return of C02 but wasn't especially hi-tech, using lit tle more than a retuned engine, skinnier tyres and sleeker aerodynamics, one reason why it wasn't that much greener than the standard 1.6-litre TDCi diesel model upon which it was based. The much improved ECOnetic model we're looking a t here is a very different proposition. There's a start/stop system, to cut the engine in traffic when not needed. There's also a regenerative braking function tc captm-e energy that would otherwise be lost under deceleration or when coasting. Plus Ford's Eco Mode system can even help you become a more efficient driver. The result of all this is a C02 figure th a t can be as low as

least not yet, so manufac turers have been forced to work with what they have. Ford's Focus ECOnetic is a good example of the kinds of short term solutions that the major brands have come up with. The original version was

99g/km and a possible com bined fuel economy figure of as much as 74.2mpg. There are five-door or

plary Focus driving dynamics which go further to discredit the assertion that green cars need to be dull. This pointy steering and supple suspension have become trademarks of the Focus brand and this car manages to strike a good compromise between its sporty side and general comfort and refinement. The Focus does, however, run on 195/65R15 low rolling resistance tyres of the type that while improv ing efficiency, have been shown to reduce levels of grip - particularly during wet weather braking situa tions. Like other Focus models, it also uses a spe cial low viscosity transmis sion oil developed by BP for greater efficiency and faster shifting. So the engine is mechani

The skirts and spoilers are precisely the sort of thing we're used to seeing on hot hatchbacks like the Focus ST. The thin tyres give the game away a little but ECOnetic defi nitely enhances the looks of the conventional Focus.

cally standard and there's no electronic trickery going on behind the scenes. How can the Focus ECOnetic achieve its sparkling envi ronmental performance? The answer is partly based around aerodynamics. Ford has taken the latest Focus shape, distinguishable by its trapezoidal air intake in the front bumper and elon gated headlamps, and set about making it as slippery as a Teflon coated banana skin. The car rides 10mm lower at the front and 8mm lower at the rear. The under bumper skirt is reprofiled, blanking plates are inserted at the inside edges of the air-intake and there's a rear spoiler too. These small measures help the ECOnet ic achieve a drag coefficient of 0.31 meaning the engine has to work less hard to move the ECOnetic along. All these aerodynamic

system, well it works like other similar set-ups used by other manufacturers, shutting down the engine when the vehicle is at idle - at a traffic light, for exam ple - and restarting it when the driver wants to move off, saving the fuel wasted while the vehicle is station ary. Ford reckon savings of around 10% in fuel con sumption are possible, but if you can do without this, you can make a small sav ing yourself by opting out of the stop/start system:. you'll still get 104g/km of C02 and return around 70mpg on the combined cycle. That's because you do still get the Smart Regenerative Charging sys tem th a t increases the alternator output when the vehicle brakes or deceler ates. This converts the kinetic energy of the vehi cle into electric energy without having to use addi
