Urban Folk Quartet appear at The Grand as part of their UK tour. This will be a unique and informal event as the concert will be recorded and featured on BBC Radio Lancashire's weekly acoustic and roots music show. The Drift, presented by Phil

Brown. The band features the seasoned talents of Joe

Broughton (guitar, fiddle and mandolin) and Paloma Trigas (fiddle), both of whom were discovered by legendary artists The Albion Band and Carlos Nunez respectively. The hugely skilled multi instrumentalist Frank Moon (Oud, guitar and bass) and the inspirational Tom Chapman (percussion) complete a formidable quartet. Broughton's classical training and roots in the

English tradition combine in wonderful synchronicity with Paloma's Galician roots. These mix perfectly with Frank's obsession with the Oud and Joe's sought after feel for the rock groove. The following Saturday, on November 14th, a

gaggle of local talents will line up to support headliners The Travelling Band, as the inaugural "Acoustic Village" takes place at The Grand. This event is the first in a quarterly format that weaves a programme of contemporary, traditional and alternative forms of folk music, featuring guests of local and national repute. Manchester based six-piece The Travelling Band,

former winners of the Glastonbury's New Talent competition in 2008, are a band in great form at the moment. Their live show is a feel-good tour- de-force, from heartfelt ballads, through psychedelic sing-alongs to classic pop songs. The

The event crowns a series of enthusiastically

supported nights of line dancing, which have been held every Monday evening at The Grand's auditorium, led by local instructor John Barber. Country music champion Dean has been a key

figure in the meteoric rise in the popularity of line dancing in the UK over the past decade. Reared on his father's favourite artists such as

George Jones and Hank Williams, John, a former policeman, opted for a career in music as his

leisure pursuit blossomed. Since then, he has never looked back. He has

become a major songwriter for television and performed at many of the leading venues in Europe, including Wembley Stadium, G Mex, Euro Disney and even alongside the London Marathon. He also took part at a world record-breaking line dancing, attempt filmed by the BBC, which saw

5,000 dancers. In 1991, John and his wife Carol organised what

was to become the biggest, and best, dedicated line dance and country events in the country. "A Chance to Dance" was a massive success with thousands of people attending from throughout

the UK and overseas. • John Dean appears at The Grand on Saturday,

October 31st. Tickets, including a pie and peas supper, are just £10. Doors 7.30pm. • The Grand's ballroom dancing class, "Come

dancing", held every Wednesday morning, is calling for more participants for its beginners class, held from 9.30am. For more information, please contact Zoe Pickard on 01200 421599 or zoe.pickard@the-grand.org.uk

is the latest big name band to rock out at The Grand this month. Formed in Barnsley, in 1979, the

S

group evolved from a band known as S.O.B featuring bassist Steve Dawson and guitarist Graham Oliver. The band's breakthrough single. Big

Teaser, was met with critical acclaim and drew the attention of the music press. They adopted the name Saxon and released a self-titled album the following year. It was notable from an early stage that this band possessed an ability to pen melodic metal anthems with great ease. In 1980, the Wheels of Steel album, was released and reached the top 5 of the UK album charts. The song itself. Wheels of Steel, reached the top 20 and tracks such as Strong Arm of the Law and 747 (Strangers In The Night), started to see the band scale the heights of heavy rock. A key moment in their career was their performance at the very first UK

Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington Park. Around the time of releasing their next album. Denim and Leather, Saxon's assault on the US commenced. This saw them open for AC/DC, Rush, Black Sabbath, and Blue Oyster Cult, their performances drawing critical acclaim. Headlining tours across Europe and

US followed in the early 1980's, where Saxon established themselves alongside the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest as one of the leading metal bands. Their live energy at this time was captured in the 1982 release. The Eagle Has Landed. Saxon signed to EMI in 1985 but

bassist Steve Dawson left soon after on the eve of another huge world

tour. In 2000, after a period of inactivity,

Dawson and Oliver decided to officially rename themselves OD Saxon and the band has been known by this name ever since. Despite recording other material from 1996 onwards, their live sets are always stacked with classic Saxon songs. • OD Saxon appear at The Grand

on Saturday, November 7th, with support coming from Clitheroe band

Stealer.
