Masters.of their trade! M a n i i i l artf,

LOCAL youngsters have enjoyed medal success amongst international competition at the 18th United Nations of Ju

jitsu Championships. Ten nations converged on

Stanley Park in Blackpool to be graded, spanning sev eral events ranging from fighting through to tradi tional Kata routines. And the Masters of Mar

tial Arts Academy, who have classes in Clitheroe and Whalley - as well as Accrington, Great Har wood,

Blackburn,

Rossendale, Burnley and Rishton — produced two medal winners from their Whalley club.

• Purple belt Ysabel Carter came home with a silver, while green belt Grade Bradford won bronze. Sensei Colin Heaton said:

“Both girls have done remarkably well to win medals in an international event. “Ysabel has been with us

four years and Gracie two and a half, and both started training from scratch, so it is a fantastic achievement.” The club’s Whalley class

es are at Oakhill College, with the Clitheroe club based at Edisford Primary School, and anyone interest ed in taking up martial arts can contact 01254 889333, or go to: www.mma.uk.com

DOG Inn return to action on Sunday, eager to get back to winning ways when they entertain Clarence at Wilson’s. The Whalley side did

not play last Sunday as there were no Harry Dewhurst Memorial League games due to the Blackburn Rovers versus Burnley match. Dog defeated Clarence

at Haslingden in their opening game of the sea son and manager Simon Kerins is hoping that his side can complete the dou ble.

He said: “We are pro

gressing well and, while our three defeats to date all appear to have been heavy, none of the score lines has done us justice. “We are a not a million

miles away from being able to challenge consistently a t the top of the table, whereas damage limitation was often the main objec tive last season. “We should win on Sun

day, but Clarence won't give us three points on a plate and we will have to go about things profession ally and patiently.”

CUP holders Rimington marched into the quarter-finals of the Craven Cup after annihilating Bradley on Saturday. The rout started as early as the

third minute when Daniel Green rose to head home. The visitors’ efforts to close the hosts down were then in vain as Rimington continued their relentless attack. Full-backs Bolton and

Hutchinson caused problems for their opponents all afternoon with their continuous bursts down the flanks, while skipper McClean helped himself to a first-half hat- trick. Lloyd slipped him in to fin ish from 10 yards for his first, his second was another neat finish.

before he struck a bullet free-kick from 20 yards beyond the startled keeper. But Lloyd wasn’t to be outdone

and grabbed two goals of his own; one a towering header and the other a cool finish from inside the area. Rimington continued to press

after the break and it wasn’t long before their flowing football paid off once more when Lloyd sealed his hat-trick after latching onto a ball over the top, before finishing with an exquisite volley into the far comer. He scored his fourth with a

speculative strike into the comer while his fifth came from another header which sealed the rout. Veteran Jon Penman was also

utilised by boss Terry Braith- waite and the striker wasted no time in proving his worth as he followed up a parried shot to tap horhe. Dinsdale and Penman then

missed great opportunities to extend their side’s lead further, before Walsh curled a sensational strike into the far comer. Rimihgton next face a tough

game away at Oswaldtwistle on Saturday, October 31st as they look to. maintain their title chal lenge.

Where eagles dare!

THE dogleg par four 16th at Clitheroe proved to be a crucial hole for Ken' Mantle in Satur day’s Single Stableford. A blob on the par five

13th and i t looked like another bad day, but Mantle produced an eagle two for five points on the 16th to elevate him to top spot in Dm- sion Two ■with 37 points. Nick Tomlinson came

out on top of a three card play-off on 36 points to claim second prize ahead of Paul Dunlop and Paul H. Wood. Mike Gibson took the

honours in Division One when birdies on the sec ond and third set him up nicely for 39 points. Tim Stanley and Alan

Henderson both pro duced 38 points, and Stanley, courtesy of of a birdie, birdie finish took the runners-up prize. Peter Dunn found him

self in fourth place after scrutiny of the cards showed he had a better back nine than Paul Hamer. Mark Ashworth was

his usual self to bag the best gross with 35 points. Sunday’s Three-Man

Team event suffered in numbers because of another local sporting event, but the winning team of Malcolm Brown, Gary Speak and Mike Tattersall were not to be distracted as they returned 81 points. Bro-wn started slowly,

but once fired up, he fig ured prominently on 14 holes to boost the total. The Wettons, John and

Andrew, teamed up with Mr Stokes and they shared the workload to find 79 points and take second place. Julian Troup and the

Preedys, Dan and Dom were four shots back in third. Last week’s Junior

Medal was a success for James Banks after a card play-off with Tom For rest on the same nett score. ■ The Heesoms have
