' and two having previous- ■: ly; been performed by the, group to great acclaim.- -' Part three was no excep- ' tion and had audiences ; laughing from start to fin-:-' ish - jus t the tonic for :' “credit crunch” Britainl ' ■ -Its opening night was a "
special charity perform- ance in aid of the Ribble Valley Mayor’s nominat- • ed charities, .Crossroads : and the Scout and Guide ; Movements, and raised a ’ magnificent £567.
•
The now seasoned per- formers, who put on two- ,
'shows a year,
played.to a . 4 full house including the - Mayor and Mayoress of ■' the Ribble Valley Coun. John Hill and his wife, , Phillipa, and Lord Clitheroe and .Lady Clitheroe, who is presi dent of the Crossroads charity. Trinity Guides ably organised interval refreshments and a raffle, all proceeds going towards the charities. - Below is a review of the
opening night perform ance, written by Lisa Der byshire: , The play’s action takes place in 1940s’ Britain, at a country manor belong ing to Nancy Allwright, , played by Pat Bowker, a :.: skilled sta lw a rt or the ., group. The set and cos- : tumes were both impres-; sive, with a tten tio n to ' detail providing authen-.: ticity. In particular. Land Girl Ginny Farquhar’s - costume'and hair were fabulous and enhanced by : . a great performance in the - ; role by Carol Baird, sus-
taining the plum iri her mouth throughout the play and a-hideous laugh to boot. As -.anticipated in a
■'murder plot,, the police jilayed a big part in the narrative. 'Constable Thomkins was convinc ingly portrayed by Gerry Purchase as a competent but, undervalued police officer,:whilst the bum bling; • Clouseauesque Inspector Pratt was won derfully created by Kim Croydon. "With his mis pronunciation, spooner isms and double enten dres, he was the s ta r of
-the show, with a difficult and considerable dialogue to deliver, which he did well. There were a couple of tricky accents for the cast to master, Roland Hailwood as Italian Enzo
■Garibaldi and Bridget Smith as the 'Welsh Blod- wyn Morgan,'both actors using all their stagecraft and experience to give • creditable performances, ; adding to the ribaldry- : . Other characters'were •
convincingly, and ably , portrayed,Teminisceht o f ':; an:Agatha Christie play, r, . with-Anita Kellington:';.
, playing Miss Joan Maple, the interfe'ring, busybody amateur sleuth, and the
. traditional-British stiff upper lip being shown by Squadron Leader. Roger. (Stiffy) Allwright,. played by Steuart Kellington. The .audience was repeatedly fed red her-
' rings by the cast of char acters, who: all con tributed toward the con- .voluted ending, with reve lations abounding and confessions galore, devices typical of both a good comedy, and a murder mystery. Special effects,, such as ornaments with a mind of their own, smoke from the sofa set alight by a match discarded the negligent Inspector, and the sound of a creaking door all enhanced the pro duction, much -to the delight and amusement o f ' a very receptive audience. - All in all the evening
was a good way to spend a - cold winter’s night with' an entertaining narrative • and plenty of laughs.
