A TWO-part slide show on the “Kibble From Source to Sea” was concluded by. Clitheroe and Dis-, trict Probus Club member Cliff Astin a t a recent meeting. • Using a mixture of slides taken
at various times over the past 30 years, he illustrated how the tiny - stream, originating in the hills of what is now North Yorkshire, becomes the large and often swift-flowing river that is such a beautiful feature of Yorkshire and Lancashire. .
, . Continuing through Kibble-
head, then Selside, Horton, Stain- forth and Settle, the P ro b u s . members enjoyed various scenic - views and historical buildings with' an attention to detail which was proof of the research that had gone in to preparing the talk.
. . . The first part of the slide show finished in the -Waddington area where a more recent slide showed this village in all its glory - as a
Yorkshire prizewinner - then, after the boundary changes, a Lancashire village prizewinner. . During part-two of the slide show, the Probus audience viewed
: lodges, mills and stately homes as the speaker took his camera downstream. From -Waddington the Kibble

Church has a new look
by Daniel McGrath
IN A regeneration project costing £19,000 and lasting 18 months, Billington Community Church has been modernised and redeveloped. '■ The church, built in 1879 and original
ly known as Ebenezer Baptist Chapel, las t'req u ired repairs in 1958, when £1,500 was spent on new foundations,:
; new toilets and plastering. This time, old and new styles have
been mixed together to create a vibrant new look. The Kev. Don Johnson said:
;“ We have maintained the traditional beliefs of the church but in a fun and modem way. ”. He added that he planned to install an
audio system, a multimedia projector and a loop for hearing-aid users as soon as the money was raised. The church has also created easy
access for disabled people to comply' with regulations for every public build ing. ; New toilets have been built, including
a one for disabled
people. There is easy wheelchair access into the church from the pavement and the church is all on one" level, meaning disabled people can get about the church easily.
The windows of the church have been
fitted with double glazing and the roof ■ with insulation. • . Mr Johnson said: “These additions ' will cut down oh our expenses for our.' heating bills, create a warm environment for the congregation and cut down our ; carbon fo o tp r in t .’.’ The vestry was turned into a kitchen to help run the cof- ■ fee shop, open on a Saturday. : ;
: ■ In June 2007, the church was given a grant of £10,000 from the National Lot tery. The grant, along with donations from the community, profits from the ■
, coffee shop and church donations, has enabled the church to put this project into place. As this is as much a community-fund-'
ed project as it is a Government funded one, Mr Johnson expressed a desire to put something back into the local area. •He said: “The church can be used as a
community building for activities of all kinds. Irrespective of who you are, you are welcome to come to try out the new facilities.” ■ Civil dignitaries attended the unveil ing of the new church on February 1st. : Our picture shows Billington Commu
nity Church holding its rededication service.
(S010209/2a) Woman felt safer in hospital
A CLITHEKOE woman lashed out when staff at a hospital psychiatric ward refused to admit her. Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard
th a t Susan Earnshaw struck a male nurse with the back of her hand during the incident a t the Koyal Blackburn Hospital. Earnshaw (54), of Station Koad,
pleaded guilty to assaulting Kobert Gre gory. She was made subject to a curfew for eight weeks between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and ordered to pay £50in compensation
. to Mr Gregory and £75 in costs. She also admitted failing to answer bail. Isla Chilton (prosecuting) said Mr
Gregory, a community psychiatric nurse, was working with a doctor at about 11- 30 p.m. when Eamshaw presented herself
■ a t th e psychiatric unit. She asked to be admitted to a mental
health ward, but when the staff refused after an assessment she became verbally abusive before lashing out.- When interviewed Earnshaw said she
had gone to hospital because of depres sion and that she knew Mr Gregory from previous dealings.
She said he was “goading” her saying
there was nothing wrong with her and what did she expect them to do? • Mr Andrew Church-Taylor (defend
ing) said Earnshaw had been involved in two abusive relationships in the past and it was her perception that she was being persecuted.’ ■ “She fears that if she leaves home and
comes to court she will be followed,” said Mr Church-Taylor. “That is why she failed to attend court
and why she felt she would be safe in hos pital.” .
