lought for the Week Body of Christ
NE of the Christmas i presents that I received this year was a page-a-;
day: diary with a “church ■,'funny”.on each'page. The
* .“funny” for August 26th goes / something like this: One'Sunday morning, after - ;;the Communion Service, the
:;congregation were having. . refreshments in the hall. The . vicar was chatting to the par-
' ents of a toddler who was run ning romid the place, showing -
:: interest in everything that was - going on.
’
;i-jVHe’s a real live wire,” com-” men ted the vicar. “Oh yes,’”.: : came the reply. “The other day -
- we had friends in for sherry' :an d asked, him to take the - verisps rpurid.-iWhen we next ^ .' saw him he was approaching ij e ^ pei^h'with the container, v. : pausing’ and sbleihnly taking -
out a crisp and handing it to :
: the guest with the words “The Body of Christ...” , ‘ I t ju s t shows how young
people notice what’s going on * and then mimic certain actions th a t have inspired them in ' some way. Each Sunday when the Church of God gathers in' Whalley Parish Church-br any other sacred space in the community or the world - we ■ are gathering together to be a >' part of the people of God in »- this place.
:' -We sit to' hear the word of God through the Bible read ings; we often hear a preacher expound on those readings; we ■ intercede for the world, the
church, our community and for- those who are in need of our prayers; the Last Supper is re enacted, with the Priest quot- •. ing the words of Jesus in th e ' :
; middle, of. th e . Eucharistic j ■Prayer, and the elements are \ distributed to members of - the Bodyof C h r i s t . . >•' ,
'. . . 'But our membership of the' . Body of Christ does not end as we walk out of church'af ter the service. All Christians have been baptised into the sairie Christian family, and as mem bers of the Body of Chnst we have a responsibility to care for each other, clergy and laity, talike, through thick and thin.’ ■
ship, but we need to agree to* differ.‘We also need to ensure
- .' th a t we are fully informed .- about the other side of the
;.'5 argument, so tliat we don’t get i vhold of the:“wrong end of the, stick” andget it all wrong. . .' ■ -'As “The Body of Christ” we
' ■ belong not just to a smah wior- shipping community in our (• own town or -village,-but to a
. worldwide community that ■'-t-embraces Christ’s teachings on
We cannot live as “singletons” ' in a community, nor can w e . kneel side by side at the altar i to receive Christ’s Body and Blood at the Eucharist, and - yet walk away, with any hard ' feelings against our neighbours. ■ There are times when Chris-'‘;
-i community and “Loving God and Loving our Neighbours'. .
.. I know it’s a bit late for New ; t Wear resolutions, but it might

•ever-larger quantities of greenhouse: gases, but the temperature has not gone up at all and, what is more, none of the scientists who generated the “warmist” panic predicted this sort of levelling off. ; Whatever confidence any of us had in-
the doom-mongers must now surely be waning.'
■ : The other thing I noticed was the sheer q u an ti ty of fun and excitement the weather caused. And I am not only talk-. ing about the children. I saw staid, sober, middle aged people throwing snowballs at* each other and heard tales of normally timid people showing off their ability and determination to beat the weather and get into work or do whatever it was that they wanted to do. I t was just the sort of exciting distrac
tion we needed from the rather gloomy news that surrounds us."' The children, of course, had a wonder-

ful time. Snow fights, snowmen, sledging and so on are not only fun but they help them grow in physical confidence and cre ativity. With imaginative teachers; it is also an opportunity for them to absorb knowledge in physics, geography and even history. But nothing is free. The economy will
have suffered a bit from millions of days of lost work. Some people will have fallen in the street and injured themselves and heaven knows how many cars broke down.
: ■ : '. There was also a death. A beautiful, 16-
year-old girl from Rotherham got on an impromptu sledge, with her friends, and tragically died when it careered through a barbed wire fence and crashed into a more solid one.
,
. , ■ There is a temptation, when we hear such'news, to steal the excitement from , our children and wrap them in cotton
. wool. This is the automatic reaction of the health and safety brigade and there were far too many school teachers who
• prevented the kids from having their fun in the playground. ' : ^
:: When I was a child; we had a wild, dan gerous and exhilarating time there when it snowed and we'all learned a lot about dealing with risk. One or two of us even had the pleasure of collecting a full set of the signatures of our classmates and teachers on a plaster cast. I t was fun. It was good for us. And it was good for our education. Life is full of tragedy, like that of the
• poor girl from Rotherham. Even getting ■ into_the bath is dangerous. Every month i;in England and Wales, an average of 10 people d r o ^ in their bath, but it would be a sadder and smellier world if we stopped bathing. : ■ , " e-maihthe

and support to patients and their families in the Ribble Valley, Hyndburn, Black burn and Darwen areas who are coping with life-limiting illness. I t relies heavily on the kindness and generosity of the communities it serves to continue its work. . Anyone able to donate

Welcome for Chernobyl children
( : ■. PLANS are now under way for the arrival in Clitheroe'of primary
L / school children from Belarus for the wholeof June.. These children benefit from spending
time away from still-polluted ground in their home city following the Chernobyl disaster in neighbouring Ukraine more than 20 years ago. Even though Cher nobyl no longer features in the news, the
■ nuclear pollution will remain for decades to come. ■ For many years now, the UK charity
“Friends of Chernobyl’s Children” has brought groups of children from Belarus for restorative holidays. Research has shown that the time spent here, breath ing clean air, drinking clean water, eating good food and vitamins and receiving basic treatment where needed, can sig- nificantly increase life expectancy. : Existing charity workers in Clitheroe are able to cope with this year's visit, but
each year there are fewer people to share the load. The charity is therefore appeal ing for help right across the board and is looking for volunteers for'various roles. Firstly, they need a few families who -
are willing to host a child for the month of June. The children are looked after by - the organisers during the day on Mon days to Fridays for longer than school hours, so there is no daytime commit ment during the week. Interpreters come
‘ over with the children and they are avail able constantly to help tvith communica-; tion difficulties. Ideally, hosts would have children of
their own of primary school age, but this; is not essential. If anybody is interested in helping, then the charity would give a ll., the help and advice needed, from an existing host..
■' ■ Strong bonds have been built up by
these visits, so much so that some of the children have returned to England on

at Oakhill are making good progress in their attempts. to clone cauliflowers as part of their biology lessons. Practical experience of plant tissue culture is part of the syllabus and the plant most’commonly used for ■ such work is the humble caulifower.: ^ _ ■' ■: It is ideal for plant tissue culture because it is read- ■
; ily available, robust enough to withstand the rigours of 'being handled by students, and grows rapidly. Growth can be seen after just 10 days and plantlets ready for transplantation are formed within 12 weeks. ^ : • So after_half-term it’s cauliflower cheese all round! private visits to see their old hosts. Other volunteers needed are for helpers on odd, days with organised events (no experi ence necessary - just enthusiasm!) and people willing to pass on their experience in an informal classroom atmosphere. - If anybody feels they could help here, it would be greatly appreciated.: .
not on visits out of town would also be most welcome!
Ideas on how to occupy children when ..
. A town centre location will be used for
the so-called educational periods. ■ ' - During the childrens’ stay, visits are
organised to swimming pools, places like - Blackpool Tower, BBC studios and bowl ing alleys and thus supervisors are always needed for these days out. ■-. If anybody feels they can help the .■
