Concert to celebrate 90th birthday

. A FAMILY concert to celebrate 90 years of Burnley Municipal Orchestra ivill be given on Sunday, February 15th, at 3 p.m. at Burn ley Mechanics Theatre. ' . The programme will include .

Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite’’ with the evocative “Morning” and the - spooky “Hall of the Mountain King”. - The orchestra leader, Clare- Gomer, will play the violin solo in Beethoven’s “Romance in F ”, which is followed by “Land of the Mountain and the Flood”, by MacCunn, a much-loved, but not so much played description of the Scottish' landscape. Vaughan

Williams’ “English Folk Song Suite”, and Mozart’s overture to “The Magic Flute” almost com plete the programme. The final item, “Peter and the

Wolf”, will feature John David, the orchestra’s secretary as the narra tor of Prokoviev’s popular musical tale. It tells of Peter and his friends

the bird, the duck, the cat and grandfather and their capture of the big grey wolf. Any children learning the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon or violin will ha-ve plenty to watch as their instruments' paint musical pictures of the char-: acters in the story.’

All children attending are invit

ed to create a drawing or painting depicting any of the concert items and to hand them in as they go into the theatre. Prizes will be given for the best pictures. Tickets for the concert can be

obtained from the Mechanics Box Office on 01282 664400 or by call ing Judith David on 01282 693330. Children’s tickets are £3 (up to 18 years); adults are £8, if bought in advance, or £9 on the day. ■ Burnley Municipal Orchestra was formed just after the end of the First World War and has con tinued rehearsing and giving con certs ever since.
