'A WARM and en th u s ia s t ic ■ welcome'greeted guest speak er Father Joseph Wareing at' th e J a n u a ry m e e t in g o f Clitheroe Civic Society. • vThe recently-retired parish

priest of S t Michael and St; John’s Church, in Clitheroe, : attracted a larger-than-usual audience. Taking the su b je c t . “Catholicism in the Kibble Val ley ”, he opened with some thoughts on the axiom that we need “to learn from where we come to be able to understand what we are now”. .

. In 1148, the Cistercian abbey

was established a t Sawley. By 1296 Whalley Abbey was found ed, a little too close for comfort for the Sawley community and rivalry ensued. Both groups were devoted to a life of prayer, manu

al work and learning, with the monks in the role of guardians of • culture and ciidlisation.

, . Fr Wareing briefly outlined the

persecution of Roman Catholic monasteries under.Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell, resulting the loss of their extensive land and closure of the abbeys. ;

- ' Five years of revival under 'Mary Tudor ended when Eliza beth I became queen. Mass was forbidden and Roman Catholic priests were killed. However, although there were some mar tyrs, such, as . Margaret of Clitheroe,'Lancashire, did not suffer too badly, as the main landowners, the Towneleys and Sherhurnes, were Roman Catholic themselves, so laws were more laxly interpreted when pos sible. Gradually, by 1687, some

Roman Catholic confirmations were allowed at Stonyhurst and by the late 18th Century, simple chapels were being built. By 1850, with the influx of Irish immigrants, many new

. churches were built, but the com munities became very inward looking and defensive. It took th e ; Second Vatican Council (1952-5) to bring about a total pastoral change, embracing ecumenism

. and praying with others. Gradu- . ally, the implementing of its ideas has led to an open outlook among Roman Catholic parishes. This conclusion of Fr Ware- ing’s talk gave hope of a closer

; working among Christian com munities. Members thanked him for such a clear and concise account of 10 Centuries of faith,

: underscored by his personal wis- domandfaith.
