with bat and ball

A FIVE-wicket haul from Whal- ley’s Declan Fitzheniy, who also top-scored with the bat, ensured

Earby were no match for the Kibble Valley side. : ^Whalley won the toss and opted to bat, as Martin Davies and Robert Palmer formed the first partnership at the crease. :: The pair put on 23 for the first \yicket, before Davies (13) was caught by Jonny Martin after facing a delivery from profession al AliAzmat.

■ - . Palmer (18) then followed,

again off Azmat, which left pro fessional Vinit Indulkar and Lee Kearsley to take the crease. Indulkar survived 42 balls,

accumulating 22 runs in the meantime, but he was eventually outsmarted and clean bowled by Matthew Haines. Kearsley hit 16 before becom

ing Azmat’s third victim as Whalley climbed steadily away on 844. ■ But Whalley failed to acceler

ate as they ended the innings on 120-7. • Fitzhenry was the top scorer

with 27 after facing 43 balls, but Matthew Haines’ delivery forced him to loft the ball into the hands of Mathew Gamer. That came after the Earby duo

had joined forces to see off George Thomas (2), while Azmat claimed his fourth and final wick et of the afternoon with the scalp of Gregory Jones (1). Matthew Hanson (16) and

Thomas Keighley (1) saw out the innings. The Earby professional bowled

well throughout, taking figures of 4-45, while Haines accumulated 3-31. In response, it was Fitzhenry

that did the damage once more as he struck five times at the expense of just 42 runs from 17.4 overs. The visitors’,batsmen strug

gled at the crease, and apart from opener Haines’ 22, the only other Earby player to reach double fig ures was Jonny Martin (11). The remainder fell and fell hard. .

■ another two each, 'while Chris Bowker could only manage one as the away side were bowled out for 63, handing Whalley a com- fortablci 57-run win. David O’Neill (3-12) and Nicky Byrne (2-7) also bowled well. Whalley will now go on to play

mixed weekend for gutsy Glitheroe

THE Veka Ribblesdale League treble is still on for Baxenden: after they defeated .Clitheroe in the final of the Ramsbottom Cup at Settle. And judging on their current form

that trophy looks as though it could be the first of three as they stand 31 points clear ahead of second-placed Read in the senior rankings while they will battle it out with Blackburn Northern for a place in the 20/20 cup final. Underdogs Clitheroe made a posi

tive start when bowler Joshua Mar quet struck with two early wickets. Galium Waddington was the first

to return to the pavilion after being subjected to a duck, putting the favourites on an unexpected 8-1. Professional Babar Naeem sur

vived for a short time, but his 18-run innings came to an end when he flicked Marquet’s delivery towards Josh McDowell. But it was Mark Rishton who took

the man-of-the-match honours for the cup kings after hammering his way to a superb 75-run innings. The recovery from the early hiccup

was well under way and it was mainly thanks to Rishton’s valuable third wicket partnership with skipper Ian

WICKETS: Neil Bolton Austin (60) who added 94 to the

scorecard between them. A strong contribution from Lewis McIntosh, who fell just three runs short of an unbeaten half century, sent Baxenden soaring to an even bigger lead as they posted a total of 211-4. Marquet took figures of 3-43 for Clitheroe. The Ribble Valley side made the

worst possible start to their reply and lost three wickets for just 13. Farook Butt top-scored with 56 not out after .

TOP SCORE: Farook Butt

hitting three fours and three sixes from 45 deliveries. However, he was just one of only three Clitheroe bats men to reach double figures. Neil Bolton struck 37 before falling

victim to Ben Swindells while Paul Gaskell posted 30. But despite the trio’s efforts,

Clitheroe were bowled out for 167, giving Baxenden a 44-run win and their first Ramsbottom Cup since the format changed in 1965.

In the league on Saturday it was a

day for the bowlers at Chatburn Road as derby rivals Clitheroe and Ribblesdale Wanderers locked horns. ^ It was Wanderers’ professional Jake

Brown and Clitheroe’s Neil Bolton that stood out in a very close encounter between the two sides. Only seven runs separated the two

sides at the close, in Clitheroe’s favour, as the two bowlers battled it out by taking five wickets apiece. Brown claimed 5-51 as Clitheroe

were all out for 118 while Bolton claimed 5-35 as Wanderers were 111-9 attheclose. The home side’s pro Paul 'Turner '

(19), McDowell (18), Peter Dibb (24), Chris Musson {12), Daniel 'Turner (13) and Paul Gaskell (15) all

. contributed for Clitheroe. Ryan Gladwin (26) and Gary Hunt

(42) looked as though they had done enough to send the -visitors to -victory, but a lacklustre back end crushed their chances. The final six batsmen in the order could only muster up 18 runs between them. • Clitheroe will now hope to repeat

their league -victory when they travel to Cherry Tree on Saturday, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m., while Ribbles dale Wanderers play host to Padi- ham.
