40 years of the market
IT p rom ise s to b e a sp a rk l in g occasio n for Clitheroe Country Market on Tuesday, August 11th, when th e p ro d u c e rs an d helpers will be celebrating the 40th anniversary. The market, which sells the
finest home-baked, home grown, home-produced and hand-crafted items, was origi nally known as Clitheroe WI Market. I t has traded in the town
both in the parish hall and now in the United Reformed Church hall and a dedicated
band of helpers and producers have ensured its continued success for so many years. The markets are held each
Tuesday from March to Dec ember, with special occasional Saturday markets. A popular feature is the coffee or tea with a slice of the cake of .the week. Anyone who would like to
- join the market - as a producer or helper - is welcome to go along from 10 to 11-30 a.m. to talk to people and see if
. they would enjoy being part of an important Clitheroe insti tution and ensure the market continues for another 40 years.
A CLITHEROE firm of char tered surveyors and valuers specialising in agricultural property is urging local farm ers not to ignore letters about to drop onto their doormats. ’ John Pallister Ltd, based in Duck Street, is urging Ribhle Valley farmers to pay close attention to letters from the Government’s Rural P ay ments Agency (RPA). Failure to do so could affect
Farmers must look sharp Maps covering the Ribble
Valley are likely to he issued in August and September and farmers must respond within 28 days of receiving them. Catherine Pallister, from
a farm’s future income in these already difficult times. The RPA is currently send
ing out new Rural Land Reg ister (RLR) maps to all farm ers and landowners registered under the Single Farm Pay ment system. The maps show exactly what land belongs to each farm, and farmers or landowners have only a limit ed time to flag up any inaccu racies - which could affect the future level of Government subsidies they receive. .
John Pallister Ltd, said: “I t is v ita l to che ck 'a ll of the boundaries to the maps and detail any amendments neces sary. A farm’s future level of Single Farm Paym en t-is reliant on this detail being correct.” In recent years smaller fam
ily-run farms in the Ribble Valley, have struggled to sur- ■vive and many have gone out of business. With the land sold off or divided, it is likely many boundaries have changed. Farmers or landowners
needing more information and advice about the Rural Land Register maps can contact John Pallister Ltd on 01200 425697 (

Cycle race along the roads
A CYCLE race in the Ribble Valley on Sunday, will cause some disruption to motorists. The Tour of Pendle, which
will attract around 120 riders as well as lots of spectators, takes in some of the valley’s principal roads. Setting off from Nelson at
9-30 a.m., the riders will head along the A682 from Blacko to
Gisbum, then on to the A59 to the A671 Whalley roundabout before heading to Padiham.. A police escort 'will lead each
lap of the race, resulting in rolling closure of the affected roads to ensure rider safety. Motorists are urged to use other routes to avoid delays. - The race should be over by around 1-15 p.m..
• WINNERS of the East Laucashlre Hospice Lottery weekly draw were: £1,000 - Mrs Dibb, Acciington; £250 - Ms Symonds, Blackburn; £100 - Ms Wood, Blackburn. A further 15 lucky players each won £10 prizes. To jom the hospice lottery call Gill on 01254 342865.
Camera club in the picture
THE summer programme of Ribblesdale Camera club has reached its half-way stage. ■ Already there have been
successful visits to Clitheroe Castle, led by Sue Marsden;. Worston, led by Stephen Rob inson; and Aureol House gar den, by kind invitation of Dr and Mrs Roland Lansdell.'- : ; •:; A milestone in the dub’s his tory was the sale of the Chat- bum clubroom, now outgrown
:and almost uninsurable as only, used once, a week. West Bradford Village Hall is now very much “home” to the club. ; A second milestone was the
acceptance;of the club’s revised constitution by the Charity Commission.
