THOMAS WHITTAKER (20) of Par son Lane was charged with assault on Samuel Speak (71). The court heard th a t as Mr Speak was walking down York Street; the defendant felled him • with a single blow to the head and began kicking him. He was found guilty and sentenced to three years probation. • The town clerk, John Eastham
(81), died after falling alarmingly ill. Mr Eastham was something of a town leg end having served as clerk of Clitheroe for almost 50 years. He was well-known . throughout the borough and was also a ■ qualified solicitor who acted on behalf of many local businesses.

. Indeed,
Mr.Ian.Cottam was deputed
by the council to defend him and this is the statement he made to the Press; “There are some cases which seem a bit harsh, but it is part of the system and it is
-right that it is left
up.to'the magistrates to decide”.
: ■ I would only say to Mr Cottam, doing my best not to shake with rage, that this may very well be “part of-the system” in
;• the Third world, but it is completely alien to England and we do not want any part of it hera Our forefathers fought against this sort of tyranny and it is a pity that it is still alive in Blackburn Town Hall. -
. - And I would say this to the distin guished “old soldier”. I salute you for your service, your bravery, your seK-sac- rifice, your jocularity, your unwillingness to bend the knee before petty tyranny and your decision to go to court to obtain your perfectly proper acquittal. Just as Mr Cottam represents all that
is alien to EngliShness, this “old soldier” represents everything that is best in it. V Mr Nassir Khan, I salute you. ■

A little piece of history on show at town library
A - :N almost 100-year-old
, Z \ : ledger belonging to a . X
A.Clitheroe business has been donated to the local library. The historic book, which-:
: contains accounts of William L. Grime Coal Dealers, was
. handed .over to Clitheroe Library by a member of the Grime family, who now live in Accrington.
y It covers the period 1912 to 1916 and is a record of all the accounts .they paid to their
■ suppliers. I t contains all the original invoices, which are carefully folded and each month is in alphabetical order. The artwork at the top of many of the invoices is very elaborate and decorative. The ledger gives an insight
into the running of the impor tan t local company a t the
.-beginning of the 20th Centu ry and how so many of the local businesses supported eachother. , Mrs Susan Holden refer
ence librarian said: “Thank fully, the ledger was offered to the library, before it was con signed to the tip. Not only is it a shining example of early 20th Century book keeping, the fact that it is from'a local 'business makes it very impor-
tant. Just by having the name of the company we were able: to find a little bit about the family and discovered th a t they lived a t ‘Overdale’ in Waddington Road at the time of the 1901 census and had three children.
. “ The index to the Clitheroe
•Advertiser and Times also revealed th a t a’Mrs Anne Grime, William and Ada’s
daughter-in-law, who died in 1981 had connections with Lodematic - another estab lished Clitheroe company.” She added: “This type of
donation, which a t first glance looks like a dirty old book; has actually added a great deal to the local history of the town and will bring a lot of pleasure to those people in the community who have a
fascination for ClRheroe’s past. “Ultimately, it should be
deposited ■with the Lancashire Record Office as they have the correct storage facilities, b u t for now i t is to stay in
, Clitheroe so that people c an , enjoy this piece of the past.” Our picture shows Susan
, with the historic ledger. (B290109/2b)
