THRESHERS off-licence in Clitheroe. is the latest casualty of the recession. The future of the King Street shop

was in doubt after news that many of the Thresher stores across the country were set to close.

. The chain’s parent company. First

Quench, was reported to be in talks - with landlords over rental payments for some of its less profitable stores.

■ Staff at the Clitheroe store learned their fate in a meeting last Wednesday lunchtime as the Advertiser and Times went to press. , •;

By the afternoon the store was

closed, with a hand-written note attached to the door reading simply:

. “Shop closed down”. ' A spokesman for First Quench said:

“Local market changes coupled with' operating cost increases meant we could no longer operate the King Street store profitably. “An early exit was negotiated with

; the landlord and the store closed on the, January 28th. We are currently work ing with the five staff to redeploy wher ever possible.’!

One Valley school closes as snow bites

PUPILS at Ribblesdale High School Technology College got an unexpected ; day off on Monday. - 'W i th severe weather, fo re c a s t .

throughout the day, a decision was made to close the Clitheroe school. Many of its pupils travel some distance, either by school bus or private trans- ' port, and there was a possibility that.^. some s ta f f members would also be unable to get to school. In the event,; the weather was not as' bad as predicted, and the school reopened as normal on Tuesday. . Elsewhere in the Ribble Valley there

were no other school closures, although some schools reported-that pupils from remote locations had been unable to get in on Monday and others cancelled some extra-curricular acti-vities, such as football matches. Otherwise, primary school children in particular had great fun building snowmen and playing in the snow. A spokesman for Brookside Primary

School, in-CIitheroe, said a special thank-you to Lancashire County Coun cil gritting teams who responded quick ly to a request to' treat the very icy Bright Street access to the school.

MP launching fight to save rural post offices and pubs

THERE is growing concern about the future of Post Offices ■

■ and, public houses in the Ribble' Valley. The Ribble Valley’s MP, Nigel

Evans,-pictured, said this week that he is seeking the -views of his constituents in relation to the future of the Post Office and tied • public houses - both issues under consideration by the Business and Enterprise Committee in the House of Commons. “These are issues th a t affect almost every, ; single resident in Ribhle Valley and beyond,” he added. Speaking from'Westminster, he

said; “British pubs are now clos ing at the rate of six per day. As vice-chairman of . the All-Party Beer ,Group, I ’m concerned at some of; the restrictive practices faced by pubs - including the tie of the pub to the large pub com panies, which restricts the choice of beers, and means higher prices to the tenant and to customers. .“Rural pubs are often the focal

hard. The Government must act now to stop more pubs going under. This issue is under active consideration by the Business and Enterprise Committee and I would urge people to contact me if they have strong ■views on the issue. . “Second, I ’m today.asking

points of their local communities and they are being hit especially ■
