s mermaid is a Winner

e la y , reader Emily Sharpe is our monthly award winner.

The seven-year-old pupil of

St Mary’s RC Primary School (pictured) reviewed Michael Morpurgo’s book “Mairi’s ' Mermaid”.

' Her three favourite parts of the book were when Mairi - found the mermaid, when they went swimming and when she went to their home. , She enjoyed the colourful pictures and for Emily the best bit was when Mairi saved the mermaid. /Emily wrote: “One day

Mairi went to the beach but

'she could not swim. When she; tries to swim she always sinks.' Mairi went a bit further out and she heard something cry ing. ; “Mairi found a mermaid

stuck in a crab’s claw. Mairi - picked up the crab and shook it. The mermaid dropped out of the claw and fell into the water. “A minute later the mer

maid bobbed out of the water. Mairi said to the mermaid if she was real and the mermaid ■ said ‘of course I’m real’. Mairi carried the little mer-

maid over the rocks. The mer maid said to Mairi that she had to go home and said if Mairi wanted to go with her but she couldn’t swim. . “So Mairi said: ‘I ’ll take

you as far as I can walk’. I t got as high as her waist, as high as her neck. Suddenly a great wave dame rolling in and lifted Mairi right off her feet and when she came down there was no sand under her feet, Mairi kicked and ■splashed and the water came in her mouth. Mairi could swim and she swam all the way to the mermaid’s home.
