p FUNEY hats were dug-out as a group of Whalley residents and children put their
' best feet forward foran annual walk. ■ Sunshine greeted 89, adults and youngsters (as' well as five dogs) who took part in the 14th: annual'Whalley walk.'-' - .The turnout of people wearing ridiculous hats
was by far the best the event has ever seen. Many of the children had made their own hats and somewere verysillyindeed.: ’ ■ • ■ Given the high standard, judging between them was impossible.
. ; Seven children were therefore awarded prizes for home-made hats, as Mows: .
: - Alex Theaker (12) won a prize for her cat-
themed creation-entitled “Cat-hatstrophe”, while Rosanna Readfern-Gray won with her spi-
der-themed headgear described as .“A Hatna- phobia”." - ■'
. ’ Six-year-old Joel Whitfield won with his wide- ' brimmed pointy Christmas tree hat and Alex • Armstrong (11) won a prize with his Aussie dan- gly bauble hat.

The Kibble Valley Netball Club has received £3,000 to enable a mixed aged squad of 90 players (10 teams aged between 10-16 years), plus coaches and umpires from the district, to travel and take part
•in a national tournament in Nottingham in June 2009 - and hopefully to bring back a trophy,to the district. The club plays at Koefiled Leisure Centre, in Clitheroe, and Oakhill College, in 'Whalley. Sarah Thompson, who has
been head coach for four years and applied for the grant on behalf of the club, said: “We are delighted to receive this' money - i t ’s great for grass-
- roots netball. . “The Nottingham tourna
ment is the real highlight o f . the year. I t ’s an opportunity for the girls of all ages and abilities to bond together,. travel and meet girls from other parts of the country. I t’s really good fun and helps put Kibble Valley on the map! Netball, like other sports and activities, gives kids the oppor tunity to learn to play as part of a team, develop their social skills and confidence.” The remaining £500 has

ALMOST .30. taxis were checked as part of a joint safety operation in the Kibble Valley.- Spot checks were carried out
on 26 taxis across Clitheroe in a bid to make sure they were safe and road worthy in the run-up to the busy holiday period. Two joint enforcement oper
ations were carried out on, December, between police and Kibble Valley Borough Coun cil. -
: - ! Out of 26 taxis checked, only one was found to have a bald tyre and the driver was
. required to change the wheel at the roadside.
• Sgt Nick Collier who was in charge of the operation said:
