annual event that is designed to' give pupils a taster, of the Further Education courses available and to make the transition from school to college easier for pupils. Competitors from 18 schools

across the North West attended a series of workshops to gain the

perfect pastry making skills, cul minating in a competition judged by lecturers from the College’s Hospitality department. • : Mahalah said: “The workshops

were so much fun and I loved learning how to cook such a vari-' ety of pastries. I made so many new friends and it was a fantastic feelingwhenlwon.” - Over a four-week period the bud

ding chefs met at the college on Saturday mornings to learn a vari ety of sweet and savoury recipes, including breads, pies, tarts, quich es, custards and puddings. Ian Sutherland, Hospitality

tutor at Blackburn College, said: “ The quality of work the students have carried out this year has been outstanding; they were a very attentive and courteous group of

students who were willing to learn.”

. The Young Pastry Chef has. generated a huge amount of inter est towards the college and over the past six years we’ve seen the same faces enrol with the college that attended the programme. Advice sessions to tackle depression and debt concerns

AN outreach advice session run by Ribble Valley Citizens Advice Bureau will be funded by the NHS for the next two-and-a-half years. • ■ - The weekly session at Longridge Community Hospital began last October and, after good feed back, its future is now more secure. Ribble Valley CAB manager Katy Marshall

explained: “NHS managers recognise the link between depression and debt, which has now been shown clearly by mental health research. The NHS wants to prevent illness, so it has agreed to' our request to put money into ad-vice work.” - When trustees of Ribble Valley CAB started

the outreach service, they did not know how it would be kept going after the first six months. They are grateful to East Lancashire Primary Care Trust Mental Health Strategy Team man agers for recognising the value of their, interven tion and for confirming funding until March 2011. Eaty added: “Some people find it difficult to

come forward for advice. Being told by your doc-i tor to make an'appointment with us-really helps to get through that barrier. So this is a good move' forward. We would like to do the same in the new: Clitheroe Community Hospital, or at least set up : a self-help Citizens Advice Bureau Information Kiosk there, but this is still in the planning stages.” . ; An adviser will be available to speak to anyone'
