Extended surgery hours welcomed
. PATIENTS throughout many parts of East Lancashire have welcomed new
■ extended GP surgery opening hours, : according to a leading local doctor. A phased roll-out of the extra surgery
hours at many surgeries across the area has already been hailed a success. The Government aim was to have,
more than half the larger practices in Ribbie Valley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Burnley and Rossendale signed up t o : the scheme - but already nearly 70% are offering the service, with a possible further 10 practices planning to imple ment the scheme in the New Year.
-
' ^ The area’s.; community health provider, NHS East Lancashire, has
■ invented significantly in the extended hours service to ensure local patients have greater access to pre-bookable GP or Practice Nurse appointments. )
DrSwamy.Narayana, who represents
local.clinicians on NHS East Lan cashire’s Professional Executive Com-
■ mittee, said he was pleased with the uptake by the public and the service ■: now on offer from many GPs.v -
• -He said a large proportion of local.; residents are now able to see their doc- tor in the early morning, evening or on=>; Saturday mornings instead.of relying ■
■ solely on daytimerbnly appointments; . The- extra hours, ;which began being.- phased in by niany GPs over recent ; months, were introduced after the Govt';-
ernment asked for extended surgery times to ensure more flexible access for the public. Although many patients were report
ed to be happy with day-time hours, it was felt that working people and com muters would appreciate the opportuni-
- ty .to visit their GP-outside existing daytime hours.. ; '
• However, local'GP practices, which are run as private enterprises, have the. choice of whether to offer this enhanced ser-vice to their patients or opt for stay ing as they are
- ■ Dr Narayana said it was unrealistic to expect all single-handed practices to sign up, since the workload would be unrealistic for one indi-vidual working on their own, though he said that some might wish to join forces and. offer a combined rota.' " He added: “There has been a good
uptake in general. The main type of patients coming to the additional hours are those who work daytime hours, plus, commuters and carers. In other, words; those who might otherwise have had to. take time off their working day and lose ■money. People using the service have- told me that they are pleased that it has been offered to them
^ ;,.-.“We would advise patients to contact
■ their own GP. surgeries and take note of ■local information to see what extended opening timds are available..” ’

.day acting out life during the Second World War. ■ - ■
■ ■ Dressed in period clothes and playing the parts of evac uees, Land Girls and the Home Guard, the junior pupils took part in an air raid re-enactment and took shelter in the school hall where every one joined iii with a tradition al wartime sing-song. They also learnt about
W i ... in
Anderson shelters, which were- small shelters used by families; during the war, picked-tip. their spades to “DigTor Vic tory’’ in the school garden, and learnt how to “Make Do And Mend” by darning, sewing, and hearing about peg rugging - making a rug from scraps of material to save money. The day finished with a
street party in the school hall, where pupils celebrated the end of the war and listened to . •Prime Minister. Winston
m
Churchill’s-victory speech. ’ ; Mrs Dee Bottoms, who
helped to organise the event, said: “ It was an absolutely astounding success, all the children and their parents made a real effort with the clothes, they were really
^authentic looking. ■ “The children all absolutely
loved it and really enjoyed learning about all the different aspects of wartime life. It is li-ving history so it is great for them to have an.event like this.”
